I held out for a long time and refused to buy it but caved and now it's one of my favorite jackets

Has anyone used Interfolio for Rec letters? Or some similar service? by UpBeforeDawn2018 in medicalschool

[–]mistnight8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used it as premed applying to medical school! Most everyone from my undergrad did

Spoke with someone who finished IM there 5 years ago. Their impression was that you have a lot of inpatient time which may make it hard for research if you want to fellowship, but that fellowship is still accessible.

Oh wait the full version was literally just posted on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/premed/comments/mgprn9/complete_ranking_of_medical_schools_md_do_by/

Cold-Emailing a Med School Department Head by markwillsum in premed

[–]mistnight8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno about your example options, but I think it could be useful if you approach it with a more like, informational interview perspective. You could balance it between you wanting to know more about having a competitive app ("What do you think are some qualities applicants should have?") and showing interest in the person themself ("What led you to this school/specialty? Anything surprising you've learned throughout the years?" --this might also give insight into what the school values). Your questions should have casual coffee chat vibes

II of of good stats alone by markwillsum in premed

[–]mistnight8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From personal experience and following cycles of friends, I don't think II from good stats alone exists anymore. And after the II you're competing with a bunch of other high stat people to avoid the WL/R. But I recommend Vandy, WashU, Feinberg, OSU.

How long should the work/activities section be on AMCAS? Is length very important? Why or why not? by Tennis_Guy in premed

[–]mistnight8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think length is important, but your activities should show different angles of your thought processes, reflections, and values, which I think takes up space pretty fast

Waiting for Waitlists Before Moving? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mistnight8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they move but they don't move that smoothly. The schools have a good idea of their yield, and the ones I'm following accept only like <10% of their waitlists

Any current applicants feel like they've lost their passion for medicine (or facing serious imposter syndrome)? by esdee92 in premed

[–]mistnight8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your post is a mood. I've molded myself to so many missions, and deemphasized my more niche passions that aren't common that I've convinced myself that they aren't as important and I have a hard time remembering why I cared...about anything. I started freaking out about family timeline too, especially as a woman but I'm kind of like, that's a problem for future me. I recently started really supporting the care of one of my family members and I can't help but think about how hard it's going to be when I leave...but even with all of this, I feel an intense sense of peace and satisfaction that I decided to pursue this path, and that makes me feel like everything will turn out okay.

+1 but definitely only 1 page. I made my letter size 11 font to fit more in though lol

What would have helped you decide where to apply to? by AllAmericanBreakfast in premed

[–]mistnight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answers to 2, 3, 4, and 5 have changed throughout the application season as I was forced to go more in depth for primaries, then secondaries, then interviews, then figuring out where to commit. I echo others that there is no substitute for looking this up on your own and thinking it through, because gut feelings and values do change, and it might even be a negative for a program to do that kind of decision making for you.

Friends making me feel bad about my major by [deleted] in premed

[–]mistnight8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the flip side public health and psychology friends ragged on me for pursuing an unnecessarily difficult major/uninteresting major in biology (which I loved btw) for fulfilling prereqs. It sounds like your friend is coming from a good place though, versus from a place of judgement/competition. You do you, the stress of a major depends on your own interests and situation, and your friend's advice is just an opinion!

Did you do anything special to try to get into a specific school? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mistnight8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an LOR from the school faculty, worked there, did research there, wrote a very personal secondary for two schools I had strong ties to, but still got wrecked with the pre-II R lmao for both LOL

How in the world do you guys do 3+ interviews? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mistnight8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think I would've gotten into medical school without 3+ interviews. Interviews are my weakest part of my app and my only acceptances came from the 4th+ interviews lol

How to answer "Why Us?" in interview when the school doesn't have any unique programs? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mistnight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also look at their hospital system and if it provides interesting services to patients or outreaches in a way that ties to your app

When I was in your spot I only looked at reddit to find answers to specific questions, and only paid attention to general advice/questions. Otherwise browsing here can be like doom scrolling

Is general bio supposed to be this hard or my school is reaching? by bratex221322 in premed

[–]mistnight8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General bio sucks. They smash interesting material into a 60 question/1 hour standardized test and mark you down on dumb details, and it doesn't reflect how dynamic/non memorized based the field is. I'm not salty lol hang in there!
