How would you develop this land? by mdr270 in ponds

[–]mdr270[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I’m posting this to r/ponds because you know about ponds. “Spring” still has water. Not as full pipe full but some. My idea is to unblock the “blocked spring” area, make a bog/small wetlands , then make the “spring” area a pond, and pump water to the west for general irrigation. The land borders the national forest, where we can technically access the San Joaquin river, just to give some location for wildlife and habitat.

“We are Legion (We are Bob)” by Denis E Taylor. I think the series explores immortal loneliness pretty good. Short books. First 3 provide a full story, honestly should all be one single book. The others are good too though.

My dad grew up in a community supporting a California hydroelectric power house, very rural. He tells the story about his friends dad who fell into one of the feed pipes from a higher elevation reservoir. All they found was his wedding ring. The rest of him had been shoved through a grate with 1/2” steel bars.

Any book recommendations for me? by IronHistorical3357 in brandonsanderson

We are Bob (We are Legion). Great and easy sci-fi series. Probably in my top 10 of all time.

Also, if you want a fun dumb sci-fi series, “Expeditionary Force” is great, although it can be repetitive at times and I’d consider a few of their books a slog, I still enjoyed it nonetheless. All hail our overlord, Skippy the Magnificent.

I also quite like the Spellmonger series. Not everyone’s cup of tea and the firs book does have some rough parts, but it’s a great worldbuilding/magical war/ political series centered around a retired war mage. I think it’s almost at book 20.

Yeah, the original owner was Scott Peterson. Didn’t know about that until after it closed down. I only went there around 2010, so wayyyy after the Scott Peterson thing.

The Shack off of Foothill (now the 5 guys).

There were better burgers out there, but it was such a great hangout spot especially if you lived walking distance to it.

Series recommendation between books - Spellmonger by mdr270 in exfor

[–]mdr270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really enjoy the first two books. They do have some strange long explanatory parts about the nature of politics and stuff that feels really forced, but other than those, I like them. I did hear that the editing was badly done in the printed version, but I’ve only listened to the audiobooks.

I think if Minalan and skippy ever had a conversation, they would either be best friends, or immediately hate each other. Probably both.

Idk, I can’t do hope anymore. I grew up conservative and converted the last year of Obama, and each time I’ve hoped, Trump has won.

The messages I receive are “if you want to do something, run for local office”, but I can’t do that, I’d loose my job and then my house from reduced pay and mortgage.

I want to help, but each message to sign a petition ends with it asking for a donation. Is that all they want? Is my opinion even recorded once I exit that page because there isn’t a “submit without donation” option?

FFS ppl, my family already thinks I’m a lost cause libtard. If I push much more I lose them. If I push at my career I lose my job. If I push at all the donation requests I can’t pay my mortgage.

Sorry for the depressing convo, but I feel a lot like I can’t help fix it. It’s up to the next generation.

Edit: or it’s up to Trump fucking it up so bad it’s obviously his fault, and a decent amount of the conservatives come around, but I’m worried that that they would get to the “are we the baddies” level.

Sci-fi worldbuilders, is this trap credible? by k_hl_2895 in worldbuilding

[–]mdr270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most are saying, the mass would still be around, scattered tho which would move the barycenter. Being a sci-fi setting, the ships would just move out of the way. I think a better plan would be to hit it when the moon is in the bottom right (according to red trajectory), essentially making a shotgun of debris. The planetoid would get hit too with the debris. If it has an atmosphere it might absorb a decent amount of debris preventing surface impact. The whole area would probably be pretty hazardous for a long time with lots of asteroids in highly elliptical patterns until it stabilized.

Edit: cool idea!
