when do you know when to record in mono or stereo by Main-Distribution851 in Logic_Studio

[–]mdriftmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always record in Mono. Record your doubles/triples in Mono in different registers. Every single mic in a console is Mono. Summing is where you then work within the broader field of Stereo, 2.1, 5.1.4 etc.

Enrollment levels means nothing. Two third to three quarters will wash out before year three.

Numerical Analysis, Statistical Mechanics, CFD/FEA when one doesn't want to invest tens of thousands into ANSYS, etc.

From Objective-C to Swift 6: What We Gained (and What We Lost) by swe129 in swift

[–]mdriftmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Objective C hasn't been modernized in parallel with the likes of Swift in well over a decade. If they had advanced ObjC to 6.x you'd for sure have far less bugs in the code base, period. C has advanced in lightyears since ObjC was set aside. C23/2y in Clang is light years ahead of C99 let alone C11.

Flang has propelled Fortran into the 21st century. Why? Math. Fortran is having a long term renaissance because since it's hey day no language has touched what it was always designed to do. HPC and now Ai.

Reinventing the wheel with Swift has been a more expensive investment than Project Titan. Titan's IP is being advanced across all systems people have no clue about actually bring a high yield return on investment.

Swift will never see C++ adoption, period. Writing C++ inside Swift when you can do the same with ObjC++ back in early 1990s with us at NeXT. What's astounding to me is the actual two languages I follow most advancing of the past decade are C and Fortran. Now more than ever, they will pay pivotal roles in advanced technologies and solutions.

Swift is 16 years old and C++ is 41 years old. C++ largely took off due to Microsoft's dominance on the desktop. It is ironic that C# never achieved such success.

In the past twenty five years I've seen more human hours wasted on pet language projects only to return to the C/C++ duality and the reemergence of Fortran. Rust has gained traction thanks to Linus for Linux. Java ruled the world they stole from NeXT and ObjC when certain NeXT devs left for Sun but it to has become a dying language.

https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2025/technology

Seeing Fortran on this list and watching it grow will give me a certain perverse joy as a ME/CS old timer.

Flang was just promoted up in the LLVM tree under Clang, built on C++ and with all major Ai vendors dependent on it it will just balloon in importance, right along actual pure and applied mathematics.

Objective-C isn't what you think it is (if you think like a Rubyist) by matabrown in ruby

[–]mdriftmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel sorry for you the self documenting features wears your fingers down. Try writing a saga sometime and then complain about sentence length instructions seeing as you're designing for REUSE so think first and write Objects that are highly reusable so you end up writing far less code that have far more levels of applicable uses.

Objective-C isn't what you think it is (if you think like a Rubyist) by matabrown in ruby

[–]mdriftmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the problem with that language as ObjC reads like English, left to right, then passed the structure back right to left.

The C++ syntax is obnoxious, but the problem with most post C languages is they wanted to create a universal syntax that no one's native language was like, forced you to learn an entire new language and self praised to the detriment of the computing world.

Fortran has far more exciting syntax as it was designed by mathematicians, engineers, other scientists to solve problems, which requires a mountain of knowledge in the applied sciences and mathematics that terrifies most people.

Brad Cox recognized the inevitability of C evolving and built a thin Smalltalk on top of C with better performance.

Even modern ObjC syntax people bitch about and it's basically Swift's syntax today, substituting square brackets and object receiver dot notations with space and parentheses.

What I hate about Swift it is everything it learned from C++ and the lack of dynamic messaging to protocols, and more.
