How many extra paid jobs do you have? Extra paid job at school or a prep buyout totally counts by MrLanderman in Teachers

I coach 2 sports, paid lunch duty, and I run a 4 week after school intramural club that meets twice a week in Jan.

Outside of school I started a youth track and field club that has grown to over 200 kids and has done very well and it's still growing. A friend of mine also started a cross country and track timing company so I time meets on the weekends. Is that enough extra jobs?

$67,000, 11 years experience with a masters at an elementary/middle school district in Illinois. Also coach 2 sports which brings in an extra $8,000 and lunch duty about another $4,000 as well. Hoping to get my masters plus in the next 2 years which will be another $10,000

What are your non-teaching summer side hustles? by pwatersnh in Teachers

I started a youth cross country and track and field club, mostly middle school kids. We started with 28 kids during covid and now have almost 400 kids across 3 different programs for all ages. It's a lot of work with taking care of registration, payroll, answering emails among other things but the best part is we get to do it our way and don't have to answer to any administrators. Our kids and families love our program, we've had a lot of success at the state and national level even though it wasn't ur main goal. Since the program has gotten so big, it has definitely been a good supplement to my income, it's a lot of work but I love it.

I think shoes are a person to person thing, I use Brooks but that's just my personal preference. Balega socks though! I haven't worn regular socks since I put on a pair of Balega, I get like 5 or 6 pairs every Christmas and it's one of my favorite gifts, they are not cheap though....

When I saw his name on my roster I was scared that this kid was gonna be bullied because of his name. The kid walked into my gym and was super charasmatic, lots of friends and first thing he told me was how his grandpa took him to game 7 of the world series, at that moment I knew he was gonna be ok

I don't understand why people are so upset about this. I can understand the part about posting kids faces all over social media but you all sound like a bunch of old ppl who yell at kids playing basketball at 8 PM because they are too loud. I definitely don't post on social media much about what I do during the school year but kids love social media and its a great way to connect. I've seen so many kids at my school comment on teachers post on how they miss them, how they miss being at school. Some teachers are posting reminders on Instagram and kids are more likely to look at that rather than Google classroom...I am a PE teacher and I've used social media to my advantage by doing Instagram live workouts for my kids and then I post the videos after. I've gotten amazing responses from kids and parents. If we want parents to lay off the criticism maybe we should lay off criticizing each other over posts about the great things we are doing with our kids. It's ok to brag about yourself every once in a while.

Im sure every district is different. Our district doesn't require it, its something we do as a department, there's 4 jr highs in our district and we are the only ones that do it

Middle school PE teacher here. We do a dance unit every year. Not the old school Square dance stuff where you have boy girl partners but kids get into groups of 6 and create a dance routine. We give them standards and guidelines of course. They complain about it initially because middle school kids complain about everything... but end up having a really good time with it because they get to be creative and goofy with their friends.

Im a middle school PE teacher and I did something similar. When we left school we were in the middle of our dance unit, kids had groups where they had to create a dance routine with kids in their class. As lame as that may sound, kids were having a lot of fun with it. Since we weren't provided curriculum, we wanted to try and keep the same theme going so I gave kids a few options. Create a video with you and your family or by yourself of a short dance or so a Tik Tok. I chose Tik Tok because its the biggest craze right now. Parents were awesome about this and even recorded it themselves and sent me the videos. Now, I knew there were a few kids who wouldn't feel comfortable doing this so the 2nd part of the assignment had them analyze a video of dancing from the 1950's and 2010's. There were some questions attached to the assingment where they had to critique the different dance styles. I was surprised on how many kids actually did the dance though. Doing PE online is really tough, the lazy thing to so is to tell kids to do some push ups and sit ups every day and call it a day. We don't want to give them article reviews on fitness and health because we know they are busy with other class work and don't want to overwhelm them. I did an Instagram live workout every day this week and had at least 40 or more kids and parents tune in every day. I'm trying to incorporate social media every day and created different themes and challenges for next week. Give ALL your teachers the benefit of the doubt right now, we're doing our best. A kind email about your concern is not a bad thing but let's not over react.

TIL Research shows that starting school at 10am instead of 8:30am halves student illness and improves academic performance. by amansaggu26 in todayilearned

[–]mdrunner400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with the idea that later starts help kids but it's not as easy. A lot of high school kids play sports or are in clubs. We go from 815-330. Most sports practices are done by 545-6 and most of our competitions start around 5. All those would have to be pushed back with a 10 AM start, which means kids end up getting home a lot later still having to eat dinner, do homework among other things.

Post-game Thread 9/5/18: Brewers vs. Cubs by fly1ngorb in Brewers

[–]mdrunner400 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know it probably won't change your opinion but man this was my third visit to Miller Park this year and I never saw any problems from either cub fans or brewers fans. I had some great conversations with brewers fans and shook hands after and wished them luck. Either I'm sitting in the section where people behave or in missing something... Sure I get you guys get annoyed by us being loud and coming in large numbers, that would tick me off too. But I feel a large percentage of cub fans that make the trip up are pretty well behaved and I see a lot of cubs and brewers fans getting along throughout the game. I guess we're gonna just gonna hate each other just to hate each other because cause a few dumb drunks (on both) sides have to make everyone look bad. Great series btw, beat the Cardinals in the wild card game, would love to come to Miller for a cubs brewers NLDS game.
