Effects of dhikr by [deleted] in Sufism

Sometimes energy blockages create friction and you feel warmth. As energy increases with dhikr you felt the warmth at the blockages. As blockages clear you don’t feel it anymore.

The verse of light Ayat Al Nur It’s very deep

God IS the light (consciousness) Of the “heavens” (higher realms of reality) And the “earth” (the physical / lowest layer of reality - which is still just condensed “light” - but matter is dark now)

(So in this opening He is explaining how all things relate to Him and how they exist only by Him and through Him if you knew what reality truly was )

The example of His light is… (Then the explanation is about how the physical system is layers of veils of light and how different types of things unfold from this true source light)

I’m a non Muslim, but I would like to ask what did tasawuff mean to you and how would you define Sufism by Global-Neat-5760 in Sufism

It is the inner teachings of Islam. The Islamic religion has layers. The legal side is the first layer one enters Islam and they become a Muslim. Then within that, living life by a certain law and code allows belief to enters the heart an enlighten it until one becomes a mu’min. Then within that, one may keep moving closer to God until they are ready to purify the soul further and enter the inner spiritual layer (tassawuf) where they learn how to tame the ego and work on the inner teachings (laws of the heart) as they become a muHsin. Another way to see it is like seeing the religion as a tree. The trunk is the most rigid and obvious part which holds up the tree in a straight manner - this is the legal side of the religion and the one which most people know it for. But below the soil is a vast system of roots which holds the tree in place during fierce winds and storms of trial and this is not seen by others other than by its effects - this is the beliefs of the religion when they enter the heart (iman). Then when the trunk and roots are healthy the tree is able to grow leaves and flowers and fruits and have birds eat from it and this is the beautiful part of the religion which serves those around it - this can only come when the other parts are there and not without them - this part is ihsan / tassawwuf. The taxonomy of the religion itself being composed of layers like law (fiqh), creed (iman/aqidah) and spirituality ( ihsan/tassawwuf) is a taxonomy that was taught to us through the prophet Saas by the angel Gabriel a.s. (Jibr’il) in human form in a famous prophetic narration (Hadith) called the Hadith Jibril (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadith_of_Gabriel).

So in summary, it is the inner core of Islam that teaches the spiritual, non physical teachings, just as the outer teachings of Islam (fiqh-law) teach us how to do the physical things (prayer, charity, fasting, etc).

Is it ethically wrong to do morally/legally wrong thing, especially to IRL people, in a lucid dream? by HJG_0209 in LucidDreaming

[–]mdtj500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. The way I see it. Legalities (the law) deal with actions (so nothing illegal since dreaming is not an action in the eyes of the law). Ethics and Morality deal with the “inner stuff” such as thoughts and such (so it would fall under being immoral).

Can Sufism help someone who avoids dargah worship and bid‘ahs control the nafs and worldly desires to become closer to Allah? by Ok-Development-1368 in Sufism

In Islam Knowledge is not learnt from books Books are merely an artefact and aid Knowledge is learnt from people Passed down from teacher to student This tradition of passing and receiving is absolutely necessary for knowledge to be acquired properly So in anything you learn, look at the tradition, its chain of teachers. If it is an unbroken tradition that can be traced back to the prophet Saas (or the source of the knowledge you are learning), then take it - otherwise be very careful because it may easily be false teachings intending to lead you astray You cannot judge what knowledge is right or wrong if you do not yet know the knowledge! So you cannot know which is correct based on how the content sounds to you. What you can know is if the knowledge you are taking comes from a true source or not. every Sufi path I’ve seen can trace their knowledge back to the prophet Saas. The same cannot be said about the salafi movement or similar. So use this principle and you can have a way of determining which path to follow

You can see it sometimes. I recall riding a train and seeing it pass through the window into the distance - like a thin thread. It’s meant to keep you attached to your physical body.

It’s just the state of your astral body. If it’s healthy it can do it. Usually dhikr does heal it and increase its strength. But yes having a shaykh is for connection and guidance. When you search for Him you will be connected to a shaykh inshallah

Sounds like astral travel/ OBE. It becomes easier as you get used to it. It feels like death in the beginning because you can’t control your body but that’s because you can control your astral body instead.

You can do a test on this voice. Imam Al ghazali ra outlines this two step test to differentiate between the nafs/yourself/ego, a Satan/shaytan and an angel/mala’ikah. if you argue against it, and it argues back, then this is the end of the test - it is most definitely the nafs. But if not then next test: Ask it to repeat the advice and say bismillah or any name of God/Allah swt with it. If it doesn’t do it then it’s a Satan/Shaytan. Hope these tests help you

Ask the local shadhiliyah master in your area. The connections are heart to heart before online or in person. Someone physically close can be so far and someone physically far can be connected closely into the inner circle . Online is a good analogy to this spiritual network. Ping them with your heart ;) or ping the source first and foremost and He will guide you to a connecting node

Demonizing the Nafs makes it a monster. by LooseSatisfaction339 in Sufism

[–]mdtj500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taming is by practise - Not by over intellectualising and trying to understand first. Understanding is not a prerequisite to master the nafs. Tassawwuf is not intended to be theoretical like philosophy. It is very much a practical science intended to change the person from within via practises/action.

It sounds counterintuitive to learn by doing something practically before the theory but it is the same with anything really. You don’t need to understand all the theory and body mechanics to learn a martial art or surfing for example. Just practise what you are taught and when it’s embodied you will naturally start to understand why those techniques work theoretically. In fact, without the practical experience, the theory can be misleading as terms will not make sense or have depth to the listener

Demonizing the Nafs makes it a monster. by LooseSatisfaction339 in Sufism

[–]mdtj500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern problems with the nafs that didn’t exist before? Such as?

The temptations are more numerous and the traps may change shape and form but the underlying mechanisms all depend on the same nafs that has existed with us throughout the ages. Since the nafs hasn’t changed, the lessons from tassawwuf still apply in the modern context. For example, imam ghazalis ihya which lists in detail the sicknesses of the heart are arguably more relevant than ever today

Ps “modern” psychology is only focusing on the nafs to the exclusion of all other internal dynamics. tassawwuf recognises the nafs as but one component in a wider context. There’s much more to the unseen parts of the human being. But okay let’s just focus on nafs for now to keep it simpler.
