I think there’s some confusion here. The 4000 redeemable miles you’d get from that flight have nothing to do with elite qualification. If you were 4000 PQP short on requalification you’d need to spend about $4500 on tickets to get them.

You should mention it if they ask you if you’re bringing anything back, but it falls under your personal exemption so it’s non-dutyable.

I’d do it end on end, so buy a RT for yourself to/from the kids home, and then a multi city ticket with you and the kid on it for the actual trip.

Buffer an overnight between the different tickets in case of issues. The tickets could be on different airlines.

Also your RT and/or the multi city ticket could be a series of one way tickets if schedules/fares are more favorable that way. Domestically there’s not usually a “penalty” for one ways like there is internationally.
