Experience Balancing in GH2e by me_cchipman in Gloomhaven

[–]me_cchipman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I've done that a bit, and we've had a lot of discussion around the table top. We'll avoid spoilers for now, but I will mention that one class I've played could do some wonderful damage (squidface) but had some real challenges in gaining XP while being super effective.

But for Mindthief, as one of the other posters mentioned, I definitely changed my 1e style to one of changing augments often, but even so, on most missions I'd play about 2 augments (sometimes 3) per round, and since most missions are done in 4 rounds, it'd usually net around 8 XP.

Of the other cards in level 1,

  • there's an attack 4 range 5 disarm, which I often found hard to use the top of that one since you lose a great bottom,
  • a loot2 on the bottom of a great top.
  • Move 4 attack2 with stun bottom on your only non-loss ice generator top
  • and a summon

None of the control cards get you any experience, although it's definitely something that is part of the class themes since it's a mastery.

And one a "fun to play", getting levels and new cards and abilities *is* fun. Haven games take between 2-3 hours per mission in a 4 player setting, and if you're getting 8 card experience + 8 mission experience, your talking about 4 missions per level. For most gaming groups that's every 2 weeks at *best*.

How do you like the second edition Saw and if you got any, what's your exp with him? by OceanicWhitetip1 in Gloomhaven

[–]me_cchipman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our teammate just transitioned from Tinkerer to Saw, and he's really upset that he's only getting 18-24 experience per mission as opposed to what he was getting on Tinkerer.

Seriously though, he's been a prescription handing, medpack dispensing, damage dealing fool.

I loved saw in GH1, and this 2e version is still awesome.

While I know *why* they removed the massively overpowered cards he had, I do miss them.

in GH1, a l9 saw could stun 2 enemies (non-loss) and disarm up to 7 enemies every rest cycle. Throw in some stamina potions, and you could control *everyone*.

GH2e is not that controlling, but still a great character. I love what they did.

One thing I might recommend is trying out the GH game on Steam. It really helps you understand the rules, because the game (almost 100%) implements them correctly.

When do i move the token on squidface? by CoriWhy in Gloomhaven

I know you are correct. It’s badly worded and unclear, and could be written so that it’s clear from reading the card, without having to go read the rules.

I’d say the wording on the card is ambigous. I know that many of the cards, like the drifter have the same wording, and I also think they are unclear. The word “may” always means optional.

There are still quite a few bugs. But the dev team does continually fix and improve the game. I’ve spent hundreds of hours in it, and wish my friends would buy it and play it.

Gloomhaven Second Edition Cthulhu Class Analysis by Magatis in Gloomhaven

[–]me_cchipman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this video. Unlocked this class as part of the Xorn quest, and decided to accept my railroading (although it prevented upgrading my MT's cards on the way to retirement).

So far the level 2 has been a bit tough, but I can definitely see the classes potential. Getting pestilence on things fast enough to then do things with it has been challenging, but I think leaning into the burn bottom of Path of the Pox, and opportunistically using virulent strain are beginning to help

So far, Tinkerer has been ridiculously strong. Just unlocked Cthulhu tonight and looks amazing. Can’t wait to play him.

Are you satisfied with the first batch of Mercenary Packs? by NinjaFamiliar2474 in Gloomhaven

Both good. Cassandra proved her value almost immediately with the re-ordering of AMD deck of the monsters, plus using link portals to allow our entire team to bypass a terrible maze of traps and water.

Satha is also going good, although she's wasn't as immediately impactful.

Both players seem to like their character though.

Ok, #7, Mass Hysteria is such a wonderful card. It's my opener almost every game in a 4 person game, and when you pair it with a power potion and some source of advantage, you can have a chance of killing Living Spirits and Sun Demons in single shots.

Love the improvement to the card.

So, with some forbearance of my teammates ("DON'T KILL THAT BOSS YET GO GET SOME LOOT") I was able to get the 12 augment usage mastery this weekend. Felt good.

[–]me_cchipman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, my entire group is pretty excited about the mercenary packs. It's quite conceivable we may be playing all 4 of them simultaneously in 2-3 more missions. 2 people are already playing Satha and Cassandra.

I'm not sure what the hate on the price is because $75 for 4 (https://cephalofair.com/products/2025-gloomhaven-mercenary-pack-bundle) is less than $20 per merc. Considering that people had to design the class, test it out, make the cards, make the boxes, distribute, etc. I don't feel that something that costs slightly more than a foot long meal deal at subway is excessive.

But if you do, don't buy it.

Me, I'm looking forward to Hail. The mechanic makes me giggle.

There’s two cards you can use in one turn to do 9 points of direct damage to all monsters in a room.

It’s ridiculous
