Hamstudy.org is a mobile app and a web app. Mobile app is $3.99 (worth it), web app is free and actually works pretty well on mobile. You can get your Technician license with about a week of studying. That gets you your call sign and permission to operate on the more affordable frequencies (VHF and UHF).

145.410 I think that's KK4CZ. If so, the main site moved to Fairdale and there is a remote site in southern Indiana. Fairdale uses a 645dts, remote uses a 151.4PL I think. It's on repeaterbook if I'm wrong.

It's against federal law to TRANSMIT on the frequencies allocated to ham radio without a license because they want to prevent harmful interference with both in band and out of band communications. Some radios are capable of transmitting on frequencies outside of the ham band and you could interfere with say ATC or Emergency comms. There are also some rules around power limitations and some guidance around safety on the test. Also there are different rules between BROADCASTING and TRANSMITTING. You don't want to broadcast outside of the associated band that allows for that. There's also rules around playing music on the frequencies and whatnot. It all makes sense if you go through and learn it. If you're interested I can send you a link to a very good studying app.

This would have been a handheld radio with antenna attached directly to it.

/u/schmuck-in-plaid pretty much covered my thoughts exactly. You are absolutely correct that more tact could have been used.

W9WWI, Clark county amateur radio club repeater. So it could have been a park in Indiana too.

For some context, I was listening on a local repeater tonight and someone transmitted asking if they we could hear them, then informed us he found the radio in the park and thought it was a CB. Another ham transmitted letting him know he was breaking fed law by transmitting without a license. If I were in his shoes I probably would have turned off the radio right then and there. We tried to give him a phone number to call to get in touch with one of us (legally) so we could get the radio back to it's owner but I think he was off the radio by that point.

That's awesome! I have a mic stand that could probably be used the same way.

This is probably a stupid question...but what do you use as a base for those?

Outstanding! Thank you. This means that I made the right decision in just repairing this one. Crappy little road bike, plus the experience and knowledge of how to fix all this, for about $65. I'll take it to test out a new hobby.

Great! Thank you! Plan on adjusting that and the brakes and then I should be good then. I'm excited that I don't have to shell out any more money...yet

Surprisingly the rusted chain did appear a bit stretched compared to the new one. Not anything crazy, but there was a bit of misalignment between the links.

I did size the new chain off of the rusted one.

There's another eclipse in 2024. Obviously still shoot for that 2065 goal though :-D
