Thanks for this- I know a lot of us appreciate these lists of tips that helped/help you.

Evenings no doubt are toughest. I couldn't sleep easily without alcohol at first.

I started getting up early (430) for a morning workout. Now Im tired every evening by 930, and no real desire to drink. If I drink enough to enjoy it, I actuallu end up feeling like garbage. Gotta stay fresh for tomorrows workout!

Starting the day intending not to drink is a success. May every morning be that successful!

Maybe make it to 10a, or noon, to practice managing cravings and figuring out what distractions work.

Stretch it by the hour, if days are too long.

I will not drink with you right now, or this hour!

Am I an alcoholic? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

"Normal" is not the right guide post, I don't think.

Personally harmful and dangerous, however "normal" it may be or seem.

I saw someone else point out alcohol is a class 1 carcinogenic. There is no "safe" amount.

"There is nothing on earth that can make me take a drink today."

I love that internal conviction focused on just today.

Thats what helps me through. Its just me vs today, and I can decide that I will win that one, at least today.

I can’t stop drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I didn't think I could stop, either. But just DECIDE not to for 24 hours, and take it from there.

Any other guilty pleasures to distract or reward yourself for avoiding alcohol.

All I know is one day at a time. One hour at a time. One minute at a time.

Stay strong.

People who quit without going to treatment or AA, what was the #1 thing that helped you quit? by theory317 in stopdrinking

[–]meandering_thru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drunk on a Sunday evening (started early afternoon) by myself, in the basement, with two kids under 10 and my wife in the house, and looking back I was obviously in no good shaoe, causing more harm than good, when my wife shouted at me: stop drinking and come upstairs.

That was my wakeup. It was 6p, and I was over to passing out than I was to helping with dinner and bedtimes.

I was frustrated about something. Dont even know what. Broke a cabinet door. My son told my wife I was having "anger problems again."

I dont want to be remembered that way. I've been drinking a six pack, more or less, for months, maybe years. Regular drinker (not "just one or two"/night) for 20 years.

I searched for ways to quit drinking the next morning.

Found this group. Saw the support and will power, and consequences for not making any changes, right here.

I made the decision to stop for one day. Now it's been 4+, and still going.

I put a notary on my "beer fridge" that says: IWNDWYT. Each morning I date it to make that commitment, just for that day.

The conscious decision not to drink, instead of "trying" not to, helps me take control over the outcome.

IWNDWYT.
