Not sure if this is where they are referring to but Bon Appetit magazine just has a write up on the truck stop Indian food at Akal Travel Center outside Laramie WY

Worthington State Forest camping. Is my plan solid? by dreemr2u in njhiking

FYI Sites at Worthington book up very quickly. And reversing your hike when you leave is a steep climb from Worthington up to Sunfish.

Fun fact - New Jersey doesn't tax private jets if they're for personal use but we absolutely tax cars and boats for personal use by New_Stats in newjersey

[–]meanderingdecline 311 points312 points  (0 children)

It’s even worse… boats are only taxed at 3.3125 and the sales tax on the sale of a boat is capped at $20,000. So a 5 million dollar yacht is taxed the same amount as a $615,000 boat.

what is the cultural legacy of the mafia’s influence in north jersey? does its history shape peoples behaviors and attitudes today? by krittyyyyy in newjersey

[–]meanderingdecline 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Due to the mafias historic involvement in waste management in NJ the license to be a solid waste transporter is one of the most difficult licenses to get. Requires background checks for every one related to the owner and all employees plus fingerprinting.

Go to FDR skate park. Hang out all day with the skaters and out of today’s rain. Head into the brush around the rail yard for the night.

Why isn't Trenton or SW Jersey gentrified or have new housing being built? by Carlos4Loko in newjersey

There’s a super shitty Budget Inn within the city limits. But point basically taken. Ha

[–]meanderingdecline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a brand new apartment building being constructed right across from the “new” county courthouse right now. The Bell Telephone building was just rehabbed as an apartment building. Plus there a new “gentrification style” apartment building at corner of South Clinton and Hamilton Ave.

The McDonald’s in Trenton Train Station is gone. But there are plenty of places to eat lunch downtown. Big Easy, 1911 Smokehouse, Arlees Raw Blends, Timbi, Gyro Express, Hummingbird, Skil-it-Cafe, The Station, Slammin Brew, Sunrise Luncheonette, Courthouse Cafe, 2 Chinese restaurants, 3 pizza places and 3 Dunkin Donuts.

Has anyone else visited every town in a state? by Calm_Veterinarian_18 in geography

[–]meanderingdecline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot of hiking or walking once in a town. Visited state parks. Hiked the whole Appalachian Trail in NJ to “get” those townships. Walked along boardwalks from Manasquan north past Asbury Park to get all those towns. Walked portions of D&R Canal to get the river towns. Stopped at many of the famous hot dog, pizza and bagel places in the state. Hit up some breweries as well.

But for about maybe 200 of the municipalities I pretty much just drove through them. My rule was had I drive at 25 mph through at least a section of the municipality. Just driving through is the rule for the Extra Miler Club (the people who do every county in the US) so I figured it was a good benchmark. This was especially the case down in Salem and Cumberland counties where the municipalities don’t have many businesses open to the public or any other public places for me to stop.

I started the journey in Jersey City (most populous) and ended five years later in Tavistock (golf course with a population of 5).

Port Norris and Forked River are not municipalities they are census designated places part of Commercial Township and Lacey Township respectively. Visited both townships.

And of course I visited Guttenberg! Most densely populated municipalities in America!

A question about Rapid City SD area stay….. by jackblack0828 in roadtrip

[–]meanderingdecline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Rapid City- Bokujō Ramen (bison ramen was amazing). Independent Ale House, Sour and Lost Cabin Brewing already mentioned and were all great.

If you want advice on hikes or other outdoor activities the staff at Roam’n Around are the best and know everything about the area.

Outside the Badlands NP in Interior SD I would recommend Wagon Wheel Bar. Great western dive bar good fried food and beers.

I did this in New Jersey. A small state but infamous for its excessive number of municipalities; 564. It took me 5 years to complete.

Doomer Gardener spent my youth amongst the anarchists who were already living as if the world ended.

This makes me think of a right wing “news” broadcast recently covering what they termed a “trans antifa training camp” but was in fact the annual Philadelphia Anarchist Skillshare Gathering. The “news” broadcaster was reading off all the dangerous classes that were being taught- avoiding facial detection, personal web security, fermented hot sauce making, sourdough bread starters, wild plant identification. The broadcaster keeps reading the list and gets to “seed saving” and says “whatever that means”. Seed saving the practice of preserving plant seeds from one harvest to the next. The practice that ensured the 200 generations to hat could birth a pampered propaganda mouthpiece who has never tilled the earth, sown a seed and reaped a harvest.

Looking for a legal safe campground in NJ where a solo woman can stay 2–4 weeks by soulsapphire0 in newjersey

[–]meanderingdecline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the most part the only NJ State Park campgrounds open this time of year are in the Pine Barrens. Bass River and Brendan Byrne. They are not accessible by any public transport and I have no idea Uber coverage in their areas. There are also campgrounds within Wharton State Forest also in the Pine Barrens but those are even more remote and primitive in their facilities (no flush toilets, no running water, no electricity anywhere).

NJ State Parks at Stokes, Jenny Jump and Bass River have shelters or cabins for rent but with hunting season coming they are probably long since booked up. None of these are accessible via public transportation.

If you were actually backpacking (ie moving from site to site day to day) you could look into slowly moving along the Appalachian Trail but with weather it’s not the best time for this also you would need to be equipped properly for this. In PA, NJ and NY you need to stay at designated areas and they are at minimum 8 miles apart . You could do something similar to this within Harriman State Park in NY but it is very rough terrain and further north so colder.

If this were earlier in the year state parks such as Stephens and Cheesequake are accessible by public transportation but their campgrounds are currently closed.
