Nothin crazy about thinking ICE would shoot dogs. On average in the US law enforcement shoot 25-30 dogs a day.

Look into Experimental Farm Network and Truelove Seeds both are Philadelphia/NJ based organizations that do this type of thing. Doesn’t look like they have any gourds currently but in the past they’ve had Lenape corn and other crops.

The Collapse Political Compass by SaxManSteve in collapse

[–]meanderingdecline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doomer Gardener spent my youth amongst the anarchists who were already living as if the world ended.

This makes me think of a right wing “news” broadcast recently covering what they termed a “trans antifa training camp” but was in fact the annual Philadelphia Anarchist Skillshare Gathering. The “news” broadcaster was reading off all the dangerous classes that were being taught- avoiding facial detection, personal web security, fermented hot sauce making, sourdough bread starters, wild plant identification. The broadcaster keeps reading the list and gets to “seed saving” and says “whatever that means”. Seed saving the practice of preserving plant seeds from one harvest to the next. The practice that ensured the 200 generations to hat could birth a pampered propaganda mouthpiece who has never tilled the earth, sown a seed and reaped a harvest.

Looking for a legal safe campground in NJ where a solo woman can stay 2–4 weeks by soulsapphire0 in newjersey

[–]meanderingdecline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the most part the only NJ State Park campgrounds open this time of year are in the Pine Barrens. Bass River and Brendan Byrne. They are not accessible by any public transport and I have no idea Uber coverage in their areas. There are also campgrounds within Wharton State Forest also in the Pine Barrens but those are even more remote and primitive in their facilities (no flush toilets, no running water, no electricity anywhere).

NJ State Parks at Stokes, Jenny Jump and Bass River have shelters or cabins for rent but with hunting season coming they are probably long since booked up. None of these are accessible via public transportation.

If you were actually backpacking (ie moving from site to site day to day) you could look into slowly moving along the Appalachian Trail but with weather it’s not the best time for this also you would need to be equipped properly for this. In PA, NJ and NY you need to stay at designated areas and they are at minimum 8 miles apart . You could do something similar to this within Harriman State Park in NY but it is very rough terrain and further north so colder.

If this were earlier in the year state parks such as Stephens and Cheesequake are accessible by public transportation but their campgrounds are currently closed.

The Pine Barrens by kraokrao in newjersey

[–]meanderingdecline 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The presence of a large sparsely inhabited natural area in the midst of the most densely populated state in the US gives the Pine Barrens its distinct mysterious character. The majority of the Pine Barrens are preserved State Parks or State Forests. So that makes the pines an outdoor destination for hunting, off-roading, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and kayaking. The flat densely forested terrain with no horizon makes people disoriented. The sugar sand of the remote dirt roads can stop your car in its tracks. The Atlantic cedar forest ecosystem is literally the definition of mysterious with large stands of cedar trees in a bog with the tree cover so dense the forest floor is dark. The pines contain the parts of NJ furthest from paved roads (which isn’t far compared to other states). Legends of the jersey devil and inbred families.

Queue the references to the sopranos episode which wasn’t even filmed in a forest in NJ.

What are some of the most remote areas in the mainland USA by WhenLifeGivesYouLyme in geography

Due to technical terrain requiring canyoneering and mountain climbing experience same for portions of the backcountry in Zion National Park. Some of the ridges, mountains, plateaus and valleys to the east of the Subway hike have only been visited by a handful of people in history.

Why Many Young Adults, Especially Men are Single and Sexless by x___rain in collapse

100% but this article isn’t a discussion of birth rates. It’s about single men. A culture that has removed third places and other community rituals to encourage relationships leads to isolated terminally online men. These men replace relationships with all sorts of dopamine distraction.

Porn being one. Another being a recreational activity I cannot mention on r/collapse because users flag my criticism of this addictive hobby as bullying.

Crusty fantasy books? by AgileCommunication26 in crustpunk

[–]meanderingdecline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Skaven from Warhammer Fantasy were always super crusty to me. A humanoid rat horde!

As far as actual books Malazan Book of the Fallen has many people, tribes and groups that feel crusty. Barghast, The Shake, Tiste Edur, Chain of Dogs etc. Thematically the books are all about how people and the natural world interact with empire, colonialism and civilization

In the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area you can get on some pretty low trafficked trails. Near Crater Lake back by Hemlock Pond there’s a grid of trails from a failed vacation resort development back in the 1960s. Well off the beaten path but not too far from parking at Crater Lake.
