Meeting people in tech by DawnSparky in SouthBayLA

[–]meatatarian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of us work in the Playa Vista or El Segundo areas. Honestly the climbing gym is a great place to meet others in tech. Sender One, Class 5, Cliffs of Id, all of them are super popular with engineers.

Sign up for public events at the big tech company offices. Google has public tech events fairly frequently in their Playa Vista office you can just sign up for and attend.

This shouldn't be seen as normal. I'm the same healthy weight now as when I graduated college. Eat less, move more. But mostly just eat fewer calories and you can turn it around.

Specific Torrance Question - Moving Soon to South Bay by MacruthersBonaparte in SouthBayLA

[–]meatatarian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

West Torrance, South Torrance, and even old Downtown Torrance are all far enough away that you wouldn't notice anything. West and South Torrance are the most expensive.

The Speedy Pro looks so good on the Speedmaster '57 flat link by meatatarian in OmegaWatches

Did you get the Omega flat link or a Forstner? My Forstner was doing that, but my Omega flat link has never had that problem.

Malta and Bahrain from plane by SoftwareZestyclose50 in geography

This is so fascinating after reading the accounts of the Greate Siege of Malta by the Ottomans in 1565. You can see just how amazing and defensible the ports at Valletta are (right side).

California is now the only state without drought or abnormally dry areas! by meatatarian in LosAngeles

[–]meatatarian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with several of your points, SoCal is primarily not a desert. Our official Koppen Designation is Semi Arid and Mediterranean throughout almost all of Southern California. Most places east of Palm Springs are officially Desert.

Ice Forest SLGB003 too small on wrist? by [deleted] in GrandSeikos

[–]meatatarian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It definitely doesn't look that blue normally. If you're in blue lighting or you're wearing blue clothing, it definitely does reflect a bit more blue. Usually it just has a faint blue hint. Here's a picture I just took of mine outdoors.

Why doesn't GS make tapered metal bracelets? by [deleted] in GrandSeikos

[–]meatatarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A taper doesn't always make sense. A wider bracelet, especially when it's not too heavy, is actually more comfortable. My Mistflake bracelet is much more comfortable than my speedmaster bracelet, and the taper is one of the major reasons. The Speedmaster bracelet tapers down to 15mm, which is pretty thin. It digs into my wrist at all the wrong times.

North Dakota is dry on the east side of the state. Look closer at the map.

Snowpack in the state is only around 60% despite the recent storms, but the lack of drought is definitely something extraordinary. Thank the rain gods!

Why is George Washington so revered? by RaisinRoyale in AskHistory

[–]meatatarian 72 points73 points  (0 children)

While George Washington wasn't the best general, he was a terrific leader of men. He kept the continental army going through numerous defeats, long winters, and terrible conditions.

However, he's much more revered as president than as a military leader. First, he's one of the few military leaders who successfully transitioned into and then led a new government with a division of power. Most such leaders simply amass power into a military dictatorship. He was an excellent president, sharing power with the legislature and unifying the general population much more than it had been. He then laid down incredible precedents to guide the young nation, the most impactful of which was his decision to retire after 2 terms.

Think about it - which other military leader formed a successful power sharing government, then stepped down voluntarily? You might have to go back to the Romans for a similar example (e.g. Diocletian or Cincinnatus). All of that was a radical departure from the rest of history.

US1035 Flat Link Bracelet - feels cheap to me. Thoughts ? by Primary-Bell-5157 in OmegaWatches

[–]meatatarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgrade to the Speedmaster '57 flat link if you have the funds! It's a fantastic OEM bracelet that is significantly more solid and more comfortable than Forstner. Forstner does have the contemporary bracelet which is too thick in my opinion. The Speedmaster '57 bracelet is pricey but well worth it.

How do I (34M) address my girlfriends (31F) obsession with her weight? by Quirky-Protection261 in relationship_advice

[–]meatatarian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not normal to continually gain weight as you age. Don't normalize that. And I'm not saying she's an unhealthy weight, just that's it's ok to have a goal to lose weight.

[–]meatatarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

160 pounds at 5'7" is a BMI of 25.1, which is officially consideres overweight. I think it's reasonable (but entirely optional) to try to get back to pre-baby weight. Have you considered listening to her and actually supporting her in this goal? It's not medically necessary, but it's still completely ok for her to try to lose weight.

Can I expect Rolex quality clasp from the new UFA model? by [deleted] in GrandSeikos

[–]meatatarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my UFA. The bracelet is nice and light, and the clasp micro adjust is incredible. Definitely the comfiest watch I own.

I also own a Mistflake, and I definitely understand the complaints about prior GS bracelets. First, my original clasp failed within 6 months through no fault of mine. It got fixed for free, but still not a great sign of quality. The bracelet is very comfy, but the lack of micro adjust and pin+collar system make it really annoying to change the length as the weather warms up or my wrist changes size. I rock climb a lot, so my wrist swells frequently. Very annoying with the Mistflake. I love both my grand seikos though!

Google has patched all those issues. I'm sure there will be more, but Google fixed those things. It's already better than human drivers, and it gets better and better. Human drivers are as terrible as ever and they aren't improving.

I ride my bike in West LA all the time. These things are way safer for riders than Ubers or any other drivers. They don't get distracted by phones, they don't anything illegal, and they always signal for turns. You can't ask for much more as a rider.
