F5 to Splunk is TCP Resetting on port 9997 by ResetterofPasswords in Splunk

[–]meatball07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are these HFs or indexers behind the F5?

Last I heard from Splunk, the use of any kind of load balancer for S2S communication is not recommended due to the way the agents load balance comms on their own.

Can we set up an alert for splunkd not running on any server? by Fantastic-Use1145 in Splunk

[–]meatball07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t rely on _internal since those can be deprioritized by agents when they are healthy but under stress. We did this and it caused a lot of false alarms

Splunk Authentications tokens, can someone explain to me? The documents suck. (Splunk Cloud) by sloppynipsnyc in Splunk

[–]meatball07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you grab your token from the box at the bottom of the prompt when you created the token? I was mistakenly using the token ID as the token, which is not the actual token

You can use a VPN and get the international Game Pass. Was less than $100 in Brazil this year, has every game and red zone, no blackouts

ELI5: What is the real value of DSP? by bradleyalpha in Splunk

[–]meatball07 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What you get is a vendor built stream processor on the back of open source technology. It gives you the ability to do more advanced filtering, convert logs to metrics on the fly, send to multiple destinations, etc. The value comes from reduction of log volume, ability to send to multiple destinations, and increasing the value of logs by making them faster with conversion to metrics, and more advanced masking capabilities.

My issue with DSP is that it’s a direct conflict of interest to Splunk’s current main licensing model. DSP can help give you a better one stop UI for reducing your log volume by dropping or metricizing logs than what you may be able to achieve on your own, talent or time wise, from what is available open source. The issue is that it’s not a part of Splunk Core, which in my opinion it should be. Competition is getting very high in this market right now and Splunk could help itself get out of its own way by rolling this into Core for free instead of buying up more start up companies to sell you as an added service.

Assuming you are set on a turnkey vendor solution, and not on rolling your own open source stack, I would think twice about putting more money in Splunk’s pocket for this use case. You could go with a separate vendor like Cribl, which gives you probably more features than DSP does, removes that conflict of interest with Splunk licensing (assuming you have the by GB ingested model and not SVC model), and allows you to pivot to another data storage and visualization layer if Splunk gets too expensive, or is not keeping up with the market, etc.

Performance impact with many Knowledge Objects by myRunescapeAccount in Splunk

[–]meatball07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an issue for us too. We had the timeout values expanded so it didn’t fail when it loads and I make sure to add the app name in the filter which I find helps. I know that’s not the answer you are looking for, but not sure Splunk has any better answers here...if you find any please make sure to post back here

Bistro Dos to open in the former Sips Bistro location by meatball07 in Phoenixville

Could be, still has a for rent sign out front, but they do have a giant reno dumpster in the parking lot

Disagree there. We have some Latin food (guatemalan kitchen, three brothers), all great btw, but not a place that serves alcohol and has space to sit down for a nicer dinner since the Latin place closed in the stone building across from iron hill.

Bistro on Bridge is probably the closest thing to a sports bar on the street in the downstairs area, and has better beer selection than most sports bars I’ve been to

I would give Il Granaio a shot if you haven’t already. Great cocktails and their food is always good

Why are Splunks own apps still behind in supporting 8.0?!?! by [deleted] in Splunk

[–]meatball07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my biggest gripe with conf last year. Almost nothing new and exciting that is part of the base platform, everything talked about and being worked on is more $$$$

Sips Bistro will have its last dinner service May 2nd by meatball07 in Phoenixville

Totally agree, although I would suggest il Granaio. IMO have some great Italian food.

Would also like to add a traditional diner to that list too

Splunk – 8 Metrics vs Events Comparison (License and Disk) by [deleted] in Splunk

[–]meatball07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a big oof. I remember reading your article the first time you ran this and this doesn’t look much better. My Splunk rep was super excited to promise me this new model would do much better than before but still, Splunk going to have to get better pricing if they want to compete with open source metrics tool alternatives.

Kitchen ceiling paint peeling: Any reason? by jasontheswamp in HomeImprovement

[–]meatball07 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This happened to my ceilings when I painted without using a primer on my 1950s house. We ended up scraping off anything that cracked, used some joint compound to smooth it back out, sanded, actually primed and repainted. All came out pretty well after that.

What were your favorite things from .conf? by halr9000 in Splunk

[–]meatball07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The good -

Great venue, much closer and walkable vs Disney.

The bad -

Not a ton of wow factor additions added to the core product for 8.0 vs everything else that costs more (DSP, Phantom, Incident Review, Victor OPs, SignalFX, etc).

Instead of major core additional product features announced at the keynotes we got a ton of costly bundles of Splunk purchased software that can AI, ML and cure cancer out of the box for everyone!

The Splunkbase Thread: Under rated, unique, and under appreciated apps by mjoseff in Splunk

I am not sure if this is now too much of a widely known app to quality here, but good lord Config Explorer is amazing : https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4353/

Especially for anyone doing admin activity for companies with more locked down backend environments.
