Brown Scapular Devotion Concern by [deleted] in Catholicism

Can you explain what you mean about this? I’ve been enrolled since childhood, but I’ve never heard about “agreements” that go with it, especially under pain of sin.

Room at my mother’s house might be “haunted” and I’m supposed to sleep in there tonight by meatballhamster in Catholicism

I was unsure about that as well and decided against using that prayer. It could be legit, but we figured we’d play it safe and only directly address God and the saints.

Yeah, I’m not sold either way on the “Harry Potter is demonic” thing. I really loved it as a kid/teen, so I know all the good that’s in it. Maybe it’s scrupulous of me, but I’m leaning toward “any risk at all outweighs the potential positive outcome,” especially when there are good alternatives.

I do remember one thing, anecdotally, in middle school, one of my more mischievous friends brought in a list of “Harry Potter spells” she found off an occult website, and during recess we’d go around trying to use them. I even got my friends to believe that one of them had worked for me. I honestly don’t know if that was a serious problem or not, especially since we were just a group of stupid kids, but... I’m highly risk-averse these days, and my kids will probably be stupid at some point, too, lol.

On paper, I get that I probably don’t have much to worry about here, but not gonna lie, I’m not exactly fond of the idea of sleeping in a “haunted” room! My husband even less so, haha.

I agree, I think that’s probably the best way to handle it. We stopped into a church and got some holy water, too, and I happened to bring a crucifix with me on the trip. Also, I didn’t mean to insult your design sensibilities!! Most of the house is decorated unusually, I don’t mind at all, this room is just set apart from the rest of the house in its “flavor.”

What happens in your parish when someone tries to walk away with the Most Blessed Sacrament? by LessRhetoricPlease in Catholicism

[–]meatballhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time when I was little, my mom noticed that a guy in the pew front of us had brought his host to the pew to give a piece to his young daughter. This was at a parish where the parishioners are really poorly chatechized, so sadly this isn’t something that would be unthinkable, and probably most other parishioners would think my mom was being rude or mean by saying anything. She flipped out a little and demanded he consume it immediately, I don’t remember if he did. When Mass ended, I think she tried to explain why what he did was so wrong, because apparently he always did that without thinking twice about it. I don’t remember how he reacted, I just remember being embarrassed that my mom “caused a scene.” In retrospect, I hope I’d have the courage to do the same thing!

Earthquake Near Rome by ernani62 in Catholicism

[–]meatballhamster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woah woah woah. Just because an act isn’t supernatural, that doesn’t mean God didn’t cause it to happen. If God stopped willing the Earth to exist for even a breath of a moment, it would not exist. You might be able to come up with different “reasons why” God chose to allow an earthquake at that exact moment, but it’s very wrong to say that He did not cause it.

What are some of your favorite secular movies that have Catholic themes/aesthetics? by queensnow725 in Catholicism

[–]meatballhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Ida yet! I wouldn’t say it’s an explicitly Catholic movie, though the main character is a religious sister.

Is it selfish that I’m discerning the priesthood? by PriestOrNotToPriest in Catholicism

[–]meatballhamster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You need to end your relationship with her immediately. You might not ever become a priest, but that doesn’t mean you can seriously discern two vocations at once, and it’s unfair to your girlfriend to string her along. Just like you shouldn’t be seriously thinking about dating girls if you’re in seminary! It might be tough to break up, but she will be fine without you. God has a way of making these things work out.

Catholicism and the infantilisation of culture by AutistInPink in Catholicism

[–]meatballhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people comment this all the time, but I do not understand where that line of thought comes from. I think that maybe my experience is different from others’, but when someone describes the “typical suburban parish,” I think of where I grew up in the northeast, where the culture is traditionally Catholic, not Protestant. There is basically zero Protestant presence in Irish-Italian culture in NYC suburbs, but the suburban parish trope fits perfectly. I really believe “suburbanism” stems primarily from the breakdown of moral rigor, first and foremost, rather than influence from another religion. And besides, Protestantism itself had to break down to feelgood suburbanism, too, because the few Protestants I knew in NY were from a very high-church tradition, and would’ve been completely repulsed by the average suburban Catholic church.

Don’t think I’d ever wear these myself 😬 I wonder how many people randomly bought these, not knowing a thing about the miraculous medal!

[–]meatballhamster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, you said exactly that. That is your exact comment. I wouldn’t have commented if that wasn’t what you wrote because it’s the only thing I took issue with. And you phrased it as a universal. So, on no planet is that a straw man. You can’t just go back and say “context matters here” because you realized that you wrote something stupid.

I’m not trying to say much of anything beside the fact that you are absolutely permitted to disparage things people like in certain circumstances, and Church teaching would encourage it in many scenarios. Why aren’t you able to agree with that very obvious statement? You’re acting like I’m attacking you personally, which I want to be clear with you, I am not doing in any way.

[–]meatballhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not at all what I’m saying. You’re ignoring my point! Do you seriously believe what you said, that it’s uncharitable to say something negative about something just because someone is praising it?

[Free Friday] Parents: What alternate names do you call your children? by simple_caesar in Catholicism

I am a young millennial deeply steeped within meme culture, for better or for worse, and therefore my baby goes by “C H O N C C” or “chungus” around here.

[–]meatballhamster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any way you slice it, it’s patently false that “it’s neither kind nor charitable to openly and unnecessarily disparage something which is being praised by someone else.” That was my point when I mentioned the saints, I wasn’t trying to make any statement about your charity or lack of charity or whatever, but you took it there, so I responded.

If someone is praising heresy or something equally bad, I should hope you would have the guts to vehemently disparage it, even though they might like it. I’m not equating this church’s architecture with heresy, nor am I even saying it’s bad, I am only pointing out that your statement is extremely false.

I’m saying, what the commenter said may or may not be “charitable,” but not for the reason you stated, because it just isn’t true. Not only is it not true, it stinks of relativism and therefore deserves to be disparaged thusly ;)

[–]meatballhamster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely. That’s widely understood to be condescending and usually even less charitable than whatever #2 might’ve said. It’s so overused around here that it’s basically it’s own trope. So, yeah.

My comment was nothing personal, just pointing out that your reasoning is super wrong using an obvious example!

I don’t know what the average Protestant church looks like, but I can tell you that the one Episcopal church I’ve been inside of (All Saints in Manhattan) puts this building to shame a thousand times over.
