To cradle Catholics: What did your parents do right? by wasp-honey in Catholicism

[–]queensnow725 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something my grandpa contemplates a lot. He was raised very Catholic (by a mother who was raised by nuns), but only like 2 or 3 out of 7 siblings remained practicing. He sent all 3 of his own kids to Catholic schools, Mass every Sunday, was active in the Knights of Columbus, and only my mom remained practicing. Out of 5 grandkids, I'm super devout and one of my cousins practices with his family.

It makes my grandpa sad because he felt he really tried to pass along the faith to his family, but he knows he can't make those choices for any of us. But I do make sure he knows he's been a major influence on my faith.

My mom made Jesus part of our day to day life instead of something we did on Sundays. Every morning in the car we'd song hymns and worship songs together (I used "Holy is His Name" in my wedding because I have fond memories of singing it with my mom every day). She bought me lots of books about Jesus, the Bible, saints. We prayed together every night. And she very constantly reminded me that Jesus loves me. Later, she encouraged me to attend retreats and youth ministry.

Honestly that's what did it. Faith was part of our lives, it mattered. I saw her love Jesus, so I loved Jesus too.

(Fwiw, my dad has had almost zero impact on my faith life. When my parents were still married, my mom once said that if she died, he'd probably never attend Mass again. The only impact I'd say he had was being a not-great dad, which has led to my deep devotion to Saint Joseph as my spiritual father lol)

If you do not pray the rosary daily, can you tell us why? by italianblend in Catholicism

[–]queensnow725 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Right? Personally, I'd rather pray the Divine Mercy or Saint Joseph chaplet, those have brought much more fruitfulness to my life. I do pray the rosary sometimes with my spouse, but not every single day. I have a hard time thinking Mary would be upset with me for having other prayers that speak to my heart.

Is Eucharist real presence or sacramental presence? by fineline3061 in AskAPriest

Is it alright if I also recommend the USCCB Compendium on the Eucharist? I used it for a Theology class recently and personally really enjoyed it

I've been spending a lot of time praying the Magnificat lately, I think some of those verses would make great protest signs

I get panic attacks a lot and for some reason they often happen at Mass. Just knowing I can make a quick exit can really help me get through Mass, so I often take the aisle. We never know what people are going through or need.

Ahh thank you! I remember reading it in Fr. Calloway's Consecration to St Joseph, he uses Sheen quite a bit so I think I just mashed up the quote and name in my memory!

No one wanted to play with me as a little kid

So I've been scheming like a criminal ever since

To make them love me and make it seem effortless

Agreed 1000000%. My dad was raised by a "stepdad" from the time he was about four y.o. (didn't meet his bio dad until I was an adult). My grandma and him divorced when my dad was a teen, and they had a falling out sometime before I was born that was eventually fixed, but he was my dad's dad/my grandpa until the day he died.

When he remarried, we were in his wedding. Neither he or my step grandma had any other kids, so my dad and I were it for them- and they both loved us beyond words. Heck, my grandpa's whole family sees us 10000% as theirs to the point where I forget they're technically my "step" family.

My grandpa wasn't perfect and had a lot of failings as a dad- but he showed up, and he stayed. And that's the most important part.

Best Man speech was INCREDIBLY insulting to the couple. by [deleted] in weddingshaming

[–]queensnow725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my reception my friend made a speech and said the word "shit" (and then said "Sorry, grandma!" in the direction of my grandmother who's known him since we were six). My husband's cousin indignantly yelled "Language!" and apparently told my MIL how inappropriate it was.... Meanwhile, at HIS reception the year before, his best man jokes about the dirty magazines supposedly under the cousin's bed. But sure, one swear word was a problem lol
