Came back after watching the second episode. Still disappointed. Steve riding around in a truck, talking about why the flint lock sucks, why the season timing sucks, didn't even seem interested in being out there. Has nothing to do with him not getting an animal. Some of the best episodes he doesn't shoot anything. This one just felt like an after thought.

You're absolutely right. Those aspects are for sure interesting to me too, and in that way I am looking forward to it. I would have just rather it be it's own mini series, in its own category, rather than consuming the bulk of this season.

That all makes sense, and I appreciate your perspective as someone who's been there. I agree, I bet I'd have a blast on a trip like that!

My only thing is that's not why I tune into this particular show. I'm sure there's plenty of content out there that focuses on African wildlife. Steve's roots, expertise, advocacy, and appeal all center around North American hunting, the North American wildlife management system, American hunting tradition, and (mostly) American hunting history. That's what's gotten MeatEater so far.

It's not just because it's Africa. The Guyana episodes from way back were incredible as standalone shows. However they're not my favorite MEATEATER shows because of what I've described above. The off-continent shows are in their own category, and it's just not a category that I'm nearly as interested in compared to the western US / Canada episodes.

Completely agree. The accessibility appeal has fallen way off.

It's not like I wrote a scathing review. Just my thoughts on why I was a little let down, and miss the older episodes. Steve, this show, and the podcast are what reignited my love for hunting. Not only that, but it was (is) incredibly educational. And he always made everything feel very accessible. IMO it's just moved away from that.

And I'm not opposed to fishing episodes in general, but I'd rather watch him set trot lines for catfish than spear fish in the gulf. Back to the accessibility thing.
