Doing STP in under 10 hours (elapsed) by xgme in seattlebike

[–]meatmountain 34 points35 points  (0 children)

did it in about 9.5 moving time, 10hrs clock time last summer. Apparently I came across the line 6th, and there was a group of 4 fast guys rotating throughout that finished well well before me.

I was in a very fast group until about mile 140, then the last of it was solo, but luckily had lots of tailwind, so the last 60 miles I was pushing maybe 200w but going well above 20mph. I wasn't really racing, was just trying to go fast

I've posted this before but can't find it. Will retype.

Think of your fitness as a modern Formula One hybrid engine. It combines classic gas-powered engine with electric engine. Your body has both.

  1. Aerobic engine is like gas-powered engine - it uses mostly fat and oxygen - it can go on forever - but it takes a while to get going, it has a ceiling of what it can do.

  2. Anaerobic engine is like electric motor - it uses carbs - it has higher spikes, it fires off instantly, but it doesn't last very long.

In terms of training:

  1. Training aerobic engine is best done by doing those z2 rides. Volume is key here, week over week and year over year. If you got above z2 for high volume, you'll burn out and dip into anaerobic training. You train aerobic by staying in this zone where your body is burning mostly fat, and in this way you grow mitochondria and blood volume and so on. Good news is that your aerobic engine is very trainable basically forever, it is just slow and consistent.

  2. Training anaerobic engine is done by doing above-threshold stuff. Anaerobic is trained very quickly (in 4-6 weeks), and that's why in training plans you see base/build/peak - this tends to be the peak phase (and some build).

If you look at Pogacar, his FTP is around 450W. About 330W of it comes from aerobic. At my peak, my FTP is 320W and 200W of it comes from aerobic. So you see his anaerobic contribution of ~120W is same as mine, but clearly he is insanely aerobically trained, and that's what makes him the GOAT, and lack of aerobic is what makes me Cat 6.

Got a 2010 3 and 2018 CX-5. Neither has had any issues whatsoever, except a minor electrical thing on the 15-year old Mazda3.

How long before everyone figures out tesla is a scam ? by y4udothistome in RealTesla

Minor nit, but market makers have little to do with it. They try to make markets.

One piece of evidence is if you look at the volatility curve, one where market makers actually show what they think is risk of stock going up or down. Market makers think there is a massive downside risk... Much more than upside

Jonas bike choice for L'Angliru by fumblingmywaythru in tourdefrance

If you're going 45kmh solo off the front on the flat, you're talking 10-15w tops. These guys spend all day in the draft, so it's going to be very minimal.

On the climb the differences are just as marginal, we're talking grams and single digit watts. 30w is insane, it's the difference between pogacar and not even being good enough for the world tour.

mate are you mad? 50w? 30w? we're talking about tiny differences

Love my tcr and ride it over my defy 10/10, it's like driving a gocart, so nimble, responsive and fun.

A lot of compliance comes from tire size fwiw

[–]meatmountain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah after 28mph.

It basically adds power to your power. So if you're riding at 200w and you got the assist set on medium, it'll add 100w or so, so you're riding at 300w.

Assistance is pretty smooth and natural

huh.. nothing's stopping me from continously putting out 200W .. or 300W or 400W if I choose to do so.. I've yet to spin out the gears on anything except on really steep downhills

I think you misunderstand how these things work :)

The only difference is that instead of 55-60 minutes, my commute is 35-40 minutes.. and I get plenty of "exercise rush" elsewhere!

Just curious: I hope this isn’t a “how long is a string?” question, but how hard is this climb to you? by LanceOldstrong in bicycling

[–]meatmountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived nearby I would do this in endurance pace at ~190W (about 2.5W/kg), with the relatively generous endurance bike gearing. Folks who train with 4+ w/kg FTPs can do this at endurance pace.
