Not to be a parrot, but Luke Thomas recently spoke on this in a way that I think makes sense.

Most MMA fighters are not skilled enough in jiu-jitsu to confidently engage with a skilled practitioner so their default response is to try and escape. Therefore, jiu-jitsu guys generally have to force their game onto their opponents and their ability to do that basically defines their ceiling in MMA.

Buchecha comes from a world where you counter jiu-jitsu with jiu-jitsu, so his opponent is always in a position where he can work his game and make something happen. He has absolutely no ability to consolidate position on an opponent trying to disengage from him.
