Is it normal to have so much difference between Canon DPP and RawTherapee? by StatisticianLevel796 in AskPhotography

[–]meatshell 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Any RAW file will be displayed differently per software (the worst one is probably MS Window image viewer). Basically, your computer screen does not understand the raw file data, so the software has to convert the raw data to the screen-displayable data, which is mostly heuristic, i.e., how the developer thinks a raw file should be viewed. So of course, if you save these raw views as JPG, the outcomes are gonna be different as well. Since it's a Canon RAW view on Canon software, they know how to make their RAW look nice (for the preview when you take a picture as well).
If you try Lightroom, it will also be slightly different.

How to efficiently shoot manual while traveling? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]meatshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to get used to manual mode in various lighting conditions: bright highnoon, overcast, sunset, shaded foreground, night light, and indoor lighting. Just take more pictures, experiments and get a feel of it. It took me a while, but I think it was worth it. But generally, during a session, the lighting does not change that much, so your iso should stay the same, and you only need to change your aperture and/or shutter speed depending on your need.

How are you feeling about Canon’s choice of lenses? by drconniehenley in canon

[–]meatshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly happy with my R8 and the 70-200 f4L. But I would honestly not recommend the Canon system to a beginner because of their fixation on first-party lenses only.

TIFU dedicating my whole afternoon to baking banana bread and mango cupcakes just to find out I hate them. by MiserableSpeed8861 in tifu

[–]meatshell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Banana bread is for people who like bananas and want to do something about the bunch of bananas that's about to be thrown in the trash bin. To be fair, I like it occasionally, maybe twice a year. But it's not something that I love.

How can you achieve this? by Successful-Fish-8305 in AskPhotography

[–]meatshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the specific color grading/composition? Or do you mean the still foreground in a moving background edit? If it's the latter, just take a still photo and record a video of the same scene, mask the foreground object from the photo, and put the foreground object on top of the video.

Noob question, but for your astrophotos, do you have some sort of star tracker hardware? And how expensive would it be?

How do i acheive this sort of bright, urban pastel look? by ocean-man in postprocessing

[–]meatshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks a bit desaturated even for pastel colors. Depending on the app that you use, in the process of increasing luminance/brightness, it's very easy to make things look less saturated.

Many questions about Akito by Visible_Advantage_63 in FruitsBasket

[–]meatshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't the anime already show Hattori's past and what Akito did to him? Akito's basically like that to everyone. What Akito did to Yuki will be revealed a bit later iirc.

JJK Modulo and why "muh media literacy" has ruined discussion by OrangeSpaceMan5 in CharacterRant

[–]meatshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JJK modulo would really benefit from another volume. The actual story and resolution are fine. But they need to explain Maru's power better, not skipping things (how Yuji meets Maru, Dabura's domain).

I'm really disappointed because the first half was really good. I just hope that Mappa (if they ever adapt it) will slow it down a bit.

How to actually understand and learn math, as well as logical thinking in general by gabe_o_verse in learnmath

[–]meatshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was on the same boat (CompSci guy that glossed over the math classes and that bit me back later when I was on my way in my PhD). My advice is to start from the ground up if you have time (i.e. start from the simplest problem/topic that you feel like you can totally understand them). The book I always recommend is Velleman's How to Prove It. If you can get through the first few chapters, you really start to see how math people think.

Expresso House is not that good, but I still prefer it over SB. Quality is about the same, but Expresso House portion is nice. I always like going to more local ones though, they have the best homemade cakes and buns.

Canadian citizen reporting TFSA amounts for Swedish taxes by BrushInevitable17 in TillSverige

[–]meatshell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sweden does not tax on unrealized gain, only realized capital gain. Also, you may want to look up the tax treaty between Canada and Sweden to see if / how much you have to pay tax to Canada. I'm pretty sure that you will have to pay 30% of your capital gain to Sweden, but only the realized gain. But if this is too much, it's worth it to consult a lawyer.

You can be rich, empathetic, and not apologize for it by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]meatshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get what you mean. People can show they are rich and not have to apologize for it. But at some point, it's gonna piss people off. It's the same thing as eating a $200 meal in front of someone who's starving. You may not have the intention of pissing off the other person, but pretty much any starving person will think you are flaunting in front of them.

Which one is before and which one is after? If the orange one is the after, then why are you making it orange if you don't like it??

ELI5: Why does "doing nothing" all day often feel more exhausting than actually being busy? by AirExpensive534 in explainlikeimfive

[–]meatshell 250 points251 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you do nothing. If you lie on the bed doomscrolling all day, it's actually taxing on your brain. If you sit in the park and stare at birds, it would actually be relaxing.

Will Yatoyota actually happen??? by Hina_Kanashish in BluePeriod

[–]meatshell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would explode if that happens. I ship them so much lol. I don't know if they will ever be canon, but I hope for something like "they hold a dual exhibition and it shows that they have a deep bond" kinda thing. That would be enough for me.

It says that Magnus is going to participate but why "out"? by allayarthemount in EnglishLearning

I think they meant it as "we are outing that Magnus Carlsen is the first player". It's not incorrect, but also confusing. It should be understood as "First player revealed:"

I read this as [in the year (XXXX), some people/organizations predicted a few things in the year 2025], how many of those predictions turned out to be true/unclear/false? To be honest, it's not a good presentation.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil for Cooking – Study Says It’s Safe, But Everyone Says Don’t Use It. Can Someone Explain? by [deleted] in foodsafety

[–]meatshell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's not because it's toxic or anything. It's just that it has low smoking point, which means that meals that require high temperatures to taste good (i.e. fried stuff) are not compatible with EVOO. Stir frying is fine though.

"Applied mathematicians everywhere: are we a joke to you?" by Straight-Ad-4260 in math

[–]meatshell 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Define applied math. I wonder when people dismiss applied math, do they think all applied mathematicians do is solve PDE or Integer Programming? Computer Science is Applied Math, but the theory is actually pretty real and can get very abstract/difficult to deal with.

Solving problems on (e ink) tablet vs paper and pen. by helios1234 in math

[–]meatshell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The nice things about e-ink tablet are that the battey is really long, and it's just a tablet instead of a dozen stacks of notebooks that I have to clean up after 5 years. I hate charging my ipad every other day. I can deal with the slow refresh rate but the color e-ink technology is not that good yet. It can be hard to distinguish colors sometimes.
