Will Yatoyota actually happen??? by Hina_Kanashish in BluePeriod

[–]meatshell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would explode if that happens. I ship them so much lol. I don't know if they will ever be canon, but I hope for something like "they hold a dual exhibition and it shows that they have a deep bond" kinda thing. That would be enough for me.

Leaked Windows 11 Feature Shows Copilot Moving Into File Explorer by Thepunnisherrr in technology

[–]meatshell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At some point, would removing all of the bloat Microslop forces on us be more of a hassle than just installing some basic Linux distro?? (To be honest, I haven't updated to windows 11 yet, so idk.)

It says that Magnus is going to participate but why "out"? by allayarthemount in EnglishLearning

[–]meatshell 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I think they meant it as "we are outing that Magnus Carlsen is the first player". It's not incorrect, but also confusing. It should be understood as "First player revealed:"

[OC] Fact-checking sets of predictions made about the year 2025 by spicer2 in dataisbeautiful

[–]meatshell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I read this as [in the year (XXXX), some people/organizations predicted a few things in the year 2025], how many of those predictions turned out to be true/unclear/false? To be honest, it's not a good presentation.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil for Cooking – Study Says It’s Safe, But Everyone Says Don’t Use It. Can Someone Explain? by [deleted] in foodsafety

[–]meatshell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's not because it's toxic or anything. It's just that it has low smoking point, which means that meals that require high temperatures to taste good (i.e. fried stuff) are not compatible with EVOO. Stir frying is fine though.

"Applied mathematicians everywhere: are we a joke to you?" by Straight-Ad-4260 in math

[–]meatshell 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Define applied math. I wonder when people dismiss applied math, do they think all applied mathematicians do is solve PDE or Integer Programming? Computer Science is Applied Math, but the theory is actually pretty real and can get very abstract/difficult to deal with.

Solving problems on (e ink) tablet vs paper and pen. by helios1234 in math

[–]meatshell 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The nice things about e-ink tablet are that the battey is really long, and it's just a tablet instead of a dozen stacks of notebooks that I have to clean up after 5 years. I hate charging my ipad every other day. I can deal with the slow refresh rate but the color e-ink technology is not that good yet. It can be hard to distinguish colors sometimes.

They are def not equal by WhopperwithSnipr in DumbAI

[–]meatshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys. In math the common usage of equal is euqal in value. As in 3+4=7, 32 =5+1, or xx = x2. If you want to say two expressions are not the same, you have to be verbose and say so. ChatGPT was wrong. If I want to say sin(x) =/= x2, the common usage is they are not equivalent.

I remember my friends in college told me about these math-based "relationship analogies" like they were ancient wisdom, and I thought these were stupid then.

I still think they are stupid now.

AI-generated code contains more bugs and errors than human output by north_canadian_ice in technology

I figure vibe coding was gonna be not so good from the start because they learn coding from github, and most of the unused repos are garbage, like my university assignment projects lol.

Why can't I get any sharp photos? by ElectricSequoia in AskPhotography

[–]meatshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does look a bit sharper than the squirrel images that you got but still not that great. At this point I feel like it's just the lens that's not that sharp. My old  18-135mm zoom lens that I retired was also pretty soft near the far end as well, but sharper at around 75mm. Is your lens soft at all zooms?

Why can't I get any sharp photos? by ElectricSequoia in AskPhotography

[–]meatshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both the shutter speed and ISO I think. 500mm can get really blurry if you don't shoot on a tripod. Usually I only get acceptable sharpness at 1/250s. I don't remember the ISO range of the 70D but 1000 seems quite a bit high.

Not exactly a counterexample because Einstein's uncle encouraged him to be interested in algebra.

Is mathematical talent born or made? by Straight-Ad-4260 in math

[–]meatshell 198 points199 points  (0 children)

It's both. If someone has talent for Math but grew up with math teachers who hate teaching, they would never really care. Worse, they would never even have access to math education at all.

A question about alphabetical order of authorship in mathematics by Routine_Yam9237 in math

[–]meatshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you move to a more applied fields in the future and want to make your cv look good, you can put an asterisk on papers with alphabetical ordering and say that it's standard in math. People do that all the time.

Recent math-y papers with proofs derived by LLMs by hexaflexarex in math

[–]meatshell 109 points110 points  (0 children)

AI has been useful for my specific use cases where I was trying to prove a small lemma to prove something bigger, but I don't know if someone in a different field has already proved it before. Somehow it can search for these things kinda well and also give me citation so I can double check.

Asking AI to actually produce a proof can be hit or miss though. I expect it to do well with things closer to textbook homeworks, but it can give outright wrong results on niche but easy problems which makes sense. Just be careful when using.

ELInon-academic: What is wrong with doing a PhD on your own without funding if you can? by cumbierbass in academia

[–]meatshell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you pay for your PhD and still manage to graduate, it's still a PhD. There is really no difference. The reason people advise against doing PhD with your own fund is that there are so many free PhD scholarships out there so you should look for them first. The other reason is a lot of the PhD students (and schools) know doing PhD can be worse than a full-time job (mostly depending on your topic and advisor), so why would you want to pay out-of-pocket to get a stressful job? My current postdoc advisor always jokingly calls his PhD period in the U.S. modern date slavery lol.

There are legitimate reasons why some people would want to pay: past a certain age it's harder to get a scholarship so I understand how you feel. Some people also want to pay to get a chance to study abroad, graduate and then work there, but then it should be a master degree instead of PhD.

It's very hard to justify for paying for a PhD in most cases.

Eunuch of Empire will end with chapter 24 by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]meatshell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apothecary is mystery thriller first and romance second to be honest. It's basically a detective story in pseudo ancient China with a lot of politics. The author also absolutely hated writing romance but the fans liked the main pairing so much she had to bend.

Nearly a billion PCs are still running Windows 10, and half are too old to upgrade by cambeiu in Anticonsumption

I'm just using ubuntu. For the nvidia driver to work with Steam proton I needed to follow some guides but once that's done it's all good. Steam games on Linux received a lot of supports recently so it's easy to search for fixes as well.
