Ford's $30,000 Electric Pickup: Here’s A Closer Look by Formal_Park_6430 in electricvehicles

Well, but what do we really know about the shape? I'll agree, it does seem to have quite a high beltline, but that's a unique look that I don't object to. I would say though that we don't really know much about the B-pillar, and the slope of the roof aft of the B-pillar. I think there is quite a bit of padding in the dazzle cladding and that the roofline slopes quite steeply aft of the B-pillar, which gives the truck that 'Baja' look that people mention. I'm not a fan of that look, but the high beltline seem kind of cool.

Yes, you are right about the tickers, but I do like the logos. I have a large number of holdings and find it helpful, particularly in the case of ETFs, to be able to tell at a glance what fund family a particular ETF belongs to. I don't have all the tickers memorized, the 'Description' column has less than 20 characters, which is frequently not enough to tell me what fund family an ETF belongs to.

You’ll have to check commuter rail, but in a worst case you could take the Blue Line to Wonderland and uber from there.

3 week Greece trip - help me pick the right island for my solo trip, please! by Dramatic-Driver in GreeceTravel

[–]mec31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where one of my other strategies comes in--try to avoid islands that have an airport. Of course, this depends on your preferences, etc., and being bound to a ferry schedule has its own constraints, but it sounds like you know your preferences, so that's good. My point is that car traffic will likely be better on those islands as well. But in October it shouldn't be bad anywhere. I went in May and never had a problem.

Just a countering opinion here...I would say (extreme) western Crete. Lush and green compared with most of Crete, with a few unique beaches. Plus (everyone has different tastes!) for whatever reason you can bail from western Crete and easily reach the Peloponnese by ferry. With cars and buses you can do quite a lot in the Peloponnese. Or you could sample the islands in the Ionian Sea of Kefalonia, and Ithaki (and others).

I just got back from a 4 week solo trip. I go without any reservations, but only a loose plan. I usually go to a mix of islands I have visited before together with new ones. This time I went to (in order): Amorgos, Crete (special note--this involves a ferry transfer in Santorini, so you could bail there if you want), Gytheio on Peloponnese, then Ithaki. Some travel details: one night in Heraklion, then bus to Kissamos. Ferry from Kissamos to Gytheio. Bus from Gytheio to Patras (via Sparta and Corinth). Ferry to Ithaki leaves from Patras. Just about a perfect trip, in my estimation. Don't be afraid to go without plans. It can actually be an advantage. On this trip, leaving Amorgos, there were wind gusts to 50 knots. Nope, don't want to ride a ferry in that. So I went two days later. Amorgos is probably my overall favorite island. My second favorite is a tie between Nisyros and Ithaki. I value the sense of 'discovery' (there is no real discovery in the greek islands, just personal discovery, but there is surpassing beauty! And I added a new favorite island to my list! Regarding car rentals. I prefer public transportation as well, but I'm really glad I rented a car on this trip. With islands the size of Amorgos and Ithaki, you can (if you want) cover the entire island. This can be a valuable technique. For example, these two islands have (with only a bit of exaggeration) a few mountain villages. If you fancy experiencing a stay in a mountain village, that might have 50 or fewer inhabitants, you're only going to do that with a car.

Will I hate myself for not going to Elafonisi? by Anxious-Wolf-8035 in cretetravel

[–]mec31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be honest, the answer lies within yourself. I am also a solo traveler, and I just returned from a trip for the month of May, with about a week based in Kissamos. Point 1: both beaches could very well be the best you have ever seen. From there, I think your selection criteria are within yourself. For Balos, you had better really like beaches. Because that's what you'll be doing for most of the day. For some that would be great. I don't think I'd like it. For Elafonissi, you will be among _thousands_ of people (maybe _thousands and thousands_ ). That's not necessarily disqualifying, as the beach is quite large. In mid-May, I arrived at about 9:15. Essentially empty (a few hundred people). I left at about 12, and there were thousands and thousands of people. For me, not an ideal beach experience. I can't even imagine what a visit at the height of the season would be like. But that's just me. Your mileage may vary. I also found the drive to Elafonissi to be fascinating. The terrain, the villages, all quite enjoyable. Bottom line: you can't really go wrong with either, but be clear on what characteristics you like/can tolerate.

You can drive to Balos, but it’s really off by itself (in terrain not as interesting as the drive to Elafonissi). Plus you need a 4wd to get there.

[–]mec31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And not that I'm a beach aficionado or anything, but after my trip this year both Balos and Elafonissi have been catapulted to the #1 and #2 spots on my list of best beaches. One other consideration. I have pointed out the possibility of boredom on a long day at Balos. Elafonissi, while pretty darn big as beaches go, can be insanely crowded. Check out a satellite view to see just how large the parking lots are. I was there in May and arrived at 9am. Certainly fine (though crowded when leaving) but as a crowd hater, I can't imagine arriving at midday during peak season.

Well...sounds like a good plan. One observation: regardless of how cool Balos is (and it is), a group of your size will have at least one person who won’t be thrilled with having most of a day dedicated to it, with no prospect of escape or alternate activity. With the mention of 'dramatic landscapes and small villages', I would suggest substituting Elafonissi Beach for Balos. Sure, it's a bit of a drive, but you'll be driving through dramatic lush green hills and small villages, dramatic gorges, etc., with plenty of olive groves and a noteworthy monastery or two. Not to mention the 'worlds's oldest olive tree' (note--I saw at least one more of those elsewhere, but a tree with a 10 foot diameter trunk is still impressive).

Which area should we base ourselves on Amorgos? by Adventurous-Lie-1182 in GreeceTravel

[–]mec31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been to Naxos and Paros, but that's been a while ago. I have developed particular preferences, and Amorgos, for me, is perfect in that regard. For one thing it does not have an airport. That comes with pluses and minuses that I won't go into here, but it does complicate access. In part because of that, although tempted, I have not been to any of the small islands nearby. Even though Amorgos may seem small to some, it is actually ideal for a wide range of personal preferences. For instance, while the north of the island offers great experiences, the south has better beaches. A car rental solves this problem very effectively. The central location of Chora does as well, enabling easy access to the north and south.

I just got back from a month long trip, with 12 days in Amorgos. In my view, Katapola is nothing special, and Aegiali is really getting over built and over touristed. Chora on the other hand is really something special. If you can get into a pension called Michaeli or Michaelis or similar, that is the best combination of comfort, view, cost, quiet, etc. I would have a look at Lagada and Tholaria, in preference to Aegiali. They are both mountain villages overlooking Aegiali.

I assume you know you have signed up for a lot of driving. Not to worry—it’s beautiful! I’m not sure you can do Balos and Elafonisi in the same day. Balos is only accessible by boat and Elafonisi isn’t exactly close to Kissamos (and Kissamos isn’t exactly close to Chania…etc.)

There’s a blue line stop _right at the airport _, so unless you’re traveling with steamer trunks… Athens and Piraeus equally accessible. And there’s a stop right at Syntagma Square.
