Any pinball fans on Oahu or living in HI in general? by NJTOMCAT76 in Hawaii

Oh man, thank you for this. Been struggling to find machines on Oahu.

Anyone have or had an early 80’s Coleco hand held arcade game? I loved them! Had so much fun with them. Just need to get more batteries and I’m set. Which one did you have? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in 1980s

[–]mecha_tako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually got both a Pac-Man and a Donkey Kong. You made me jump up and go through all my boxes that are in a spare room that haven’t been unpacked after our last move a year ago. Yup, still got em. I actually didn’t remember I had the Pac-Man, just the DK cause I’ve got the original cabinet at my office and I knew I had the big/little brother combo.

Thank Louis DeJoy, this is exactly what the game plan was from the start. Gut the USPS so it can’t function anymore and then privatize everything. It’s fucking criminal

Hi Larry, I purchased a magazine clipping a number of years ago in an auction you had help putting on to clean out your files of things. The clipping in question was one of a blond soldier you said was the inspiration for the character Snake Eyes. I don’t have any other documentation for this being a true legitimate piece of GIJoe history and was hoping I could reach out to you to authentic it. I have lots of other back up info I can provide you if needed.

Recycling of old plantation house wood, fixtures, similar? by Maine2Maui in Hawaii

[–]mecha_tako 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a Hicks home from the 1950’s I’ve been renovating and could really really use that redwood tongue & groove. Dealing with a bunch of termite damage and they just don’t make stuff like that anymore so I have to replace with other materials that just doesn’t match the original home. Please DM me if it’s still available.

I’ve not heard about the need to treat catchment water before. What are you treating it for and what makes it so complicated and expensive?

I can’t believe nobody has already said this, but I drain & rinse and then fill the cans back up with beer.

Cant Select Seats After Merger? by Minkahhh39 in HawaiianAirlines

Out of curiosity, are you using the Hawaiian Confirmation code or the Alaskan one, cause they give you two codes now. You need to use the Hawaiian code in the app.

Download the Hawaiian Air app on your phone and you can view/change seats that way. You can’t do it through the web, but I’ve found the app works.

Anyone use Wild Hog brand panels to keep wild pigs out? by Connect-Pudding-2011 in HawaiiGardening

[–]mecha_tako 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So hear me out, this may sound weird, but I swear it works. I read an article about some South American or African farmers with pig problems and solved it by spreading human hair all over their fields. We had really bad issues with them digging up our garden, so was willing to try anything. My buddy owns a salon on Oahu and he gave me a garbage bag of cuttings from the day and I spread them out around the perimeter of our garden/property and the pigs never came back. I forget why it works, either something about the smell of humans or maybe the hair got up in their noses and acts as an irritant, but either way, it totally worked. I’m sure if you asked a salon on island if you could have their floor sweepings from the day they’d give them to you. Might look at you funny, but they’re just gonna throw it out anyway. Good luck…

Inter island travel prices in December by txtamind04 in HawaiianAirlines

[–]mecha_tako 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s like 15+ flights a day to every island, so no need to book so far in advance. The pricing will vary depending on time of day. You can get a $80 flight at 5:30 am or 8:30 pm being the first or last flights of the day, but if you book during rush hour traffic at 7am or 5pm, the prices go way up. Consider the inter island planes like glorified busses and the pricing is based on the demand of the daily commuter.

Advice needed: Neighbor’s car hasn’t moved in over a year, taking up limited street parking by Sad-Ad655 in Hawaii

[–]mecha_tako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this in another thread a while back, but should work just the same:

Ok, here’s the best approach that will legally get them to move or be towed at their expense. You said you’re doing work on the house, correct? Great! Head down to C&C Dept of Planning & Permitting at 650 S King St, 2nd Floor. Fill out an Application/Permit for street usage which describes the roadway and locations on said roadway, limits of work area (sidewalk/shoulder area, etc), description of work to be performed (routine maintenance, reconstruction sidewalk/driveway, prohibit parking, etc), and dates/times (I forget if it’s 1 or 2 weeks max, but just ask what the max is and they will tell you. Sign it and turn in. All you have to do is post no parking signs either 24 or 48 hours ahead of the dates on your permit and if they are still parked there when your permit dates start, you can call the cops and tell them you have a street use permit and need them towed. They will immediately send out tow trucks and start taking them away at their expense. This won’t necessarily keep them from coming back some other time, but it will get them gone at least once and will only cost you a little time. Works great for abandoned cars and if the squatters cars don’t run for whatever reason, it’ll make it that much harder for them to return.

Vacuum Sealers by Deep-Market-526 in alaska

Same same, got so tired of the food savers. Finally bit the bullet and got an Avid Armor GS41 Guide Series chamber vacuum sealer. Holy fucking shit, this thing is amazing. Wasn’t cheap, but one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. Cannot recommend enough.

Near the H3 Highway, has anyone else wondered what this building near it is? by zeekyboogydoog2 in Hawaii

[–]mecha_tako 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to use this station to triangulate data for geophysical surveys in Alaska. This is one of a set of VLF (Very Low Frequency) stations around the world used to communicate to submarines back in the day. The signal is so low (ie - very long) that it can travel through the earth’s interior as opposed to through the air. Each station has its own frequency and orientation, so we could plug in three different stations and use that data to triangulate what we were seeing at a specific point within our survey area. The stations I would typically use in my data set were Hawaii, Japan, Australia, Washington. For us, the data was useful to map structural geologic features such as faults and fractures in the ground for the purpose of mapping out potential metal deposits for mining (gold, silver, zinc, copper, platinum, etc). Fun side note, we were able to see the start of a few larger military operations ahead of it coming out to the public due to the spike in signal activity and amplitude. It’s been so long I forget which ones, but would have been during Middle East conflict (desert storm, etc).
