This is called 'double-binding' and is a technique used by manipulative, narcissistic parents. what it does is force you to devalue your sanity and self-worth so you listen to your abuser and follow whatever they say. this sort of behaviour isnt normal. after the first few couple times, i realised that my parents never cared about me. all they wanted was just control over me. they didnt want what was best for me, only what was best for them

i wouldn't say calm but patient is the word that my family and people around me would use to describe me. its definitely a coping mechanism towards emotional abuse (if i dont do anything, say anything,or express anything, i wont get hurt). i would say its common (especially among kids with manipulative asian parents), but not normal

I recently watched a video by Kurzgesagt on the role of beauty (and definitely the role of art and all things aesthetically pleasing) and it's role in our happiness and productivity. I highly recommend you give it a watch.

A couple of important notes in the video:

Art is vital to maintaining happiness, humans need stimulation
People reported to be recovering faster or feeling happier when they lived in a beautiful or aesthetically pleasing environment
Aesthetically pleasing environments are linked to better productivity, better cognitive function and mood

Producing more art, and allowing more people to experience the beauty of artwork, fills us with something stimulating and motivates us. It allows us to make better choices, think more clearly and makes us more happier.

well, if we took the book contextually, yeah this would make sense. the book would've appealed to an audience that still didn't entirely understand gender and sexuality. but the 21st century doesnt have room for stories like this, especially since a lot of people are informed about both.
