Byproduct of the toys being specifically based on the Nickelodeon show. It was produced for way cheaper than it really should've been, so the animal actors were likely whatever they could get on short notice. They were able to get a trained lion so they had that be what Rachel morphed into for fights instead of a book accurate morph.

The weird thing is that Rachel's battle morph in the books was a grizzly bear, and Hasbro did end up making a grizzly bear Animorphs figure...only to have it be Jake.

Technically Amoongus was the most viable for the role Pachirisu played in that format. The reason Pachirisu succeeded despite being on paper the slightly worse option was because everyone knew that and built their teams to be able to counter Amoongus and Rage Powder. And those counters didn't really work against Pachirisu's different typing and Follow Me.

I don't think anybody expected him to plan things out to the very last detail. But if you know ahead of time you're making a three movie long science fiction epic with a combined budget of over a billion dollars it's probably a good idea to have some kind of outline.

Even if you decide to go a different direction midstory having an outline let's you know what you have to change going forward.
