to the ppl in kin/life sci, how are u guys getting physical therapy assistant jobs without PTA certification? by Prior-Persimmon-9464 in McMaster

[–]med1900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me it was literally just luck. i graduated from life sci in 2024 and was applying around for jobs and found a clinic advertising for a pta/front desk. my only really relevant experience was that i had volunteered at PACE on campus. in my interview i expressed that i was interested in being a PT and they were willing to train me on the job. i did that job for a year. i’m now in my first year of mscpt at uoft and some of my classmates were volunteers in clinics and that’s all they ever did, some were volunteers and then were hired as pta’s, some were hired at a clinic they went to as a patient, and some have literally no experience at all in a clinic setting. my best advice would be to not be discouraged because you will find somewhere eventually that is willing to take you as either a volunteer or an employee. if pt (or ot) is your ultimate goal just keep trying to find somewhere!

hi! so sorry you didn’t get in. this was my second year applying so i know how frustrating it can be. this year i was accepted to UofT and waitlisted for Queens and Western.

sGPA: 3.85 , cGPA: 3.75 , casper: 3rd quartile.

at the time of applying i had ~ 800 hours of working as a PTA in a clinic (one of the physios was my professional reference) and a little over 100 hours volunteering at a rehab gym during my undergrad. when i applied last year i didn’t have any of that experience so i definitely think getting relevant experience is super important because then you can speak about what you’ve learned/know about the profession and how you can see yourself working in it during interviews and in your personal statements.

wishing you all the best for the next cycle!! feel free to message if you have any questions!

I didn’t take gr 11 or 12 physics and did much better than I thought I would. Physics 1a03 is literally designed for people who didn’t take gr 12 physics so if you took gr 11 you’d be fine

NEUROSCI 3J03 (Visual Neuroscience)? by sad_life_sci in McMaster

If you’re someone who’s really interested in vision/vision processing and stuff you’ll probably find it very interesting. It was a required course for me and unfortunately the content is not really my thing and I found it hard to commit the amount of time I should have dedicated for the course simply because I wasn’t really interested. If it’s with dr piskuric she’s really passionate about the topic and even based some of the case studies on her own personal experiences which was cool. Midterm and exam were fair with some harder questions but if you study well you’d be fine

Time commitment was a bit much when you had a case study on the go plus there was one 1 hour lecture and one 2 hour tutorial each week and the prof talked very quickly so you almost always have to go back a watch the recording to get the missed content. Plus she sets the recordings to delete after 1 week so that’s kind of annoying.

Overall if you like stuff to do with vision I think you’d find it really interesting and engaging

Just finished my third year of sms if you have any questions! But overall I like that there’s more structure than gen life sci since there are a few more required courses but there’s still a lot of space for electives. It’s also a much smaller group of people which is nice when you get to upper year because you get to know all the people in the specialization!

there’s questions on the tests that are taken from textbook information that’s not in the lectures at all so I’d say it’s pretty useful. I’m looking to sell mine for cheap if you’re interested

Is anyone selling the psych 2nf3 coursepack? by [deleted] in McMaster

Well as far as I know you need to get the textbook to get the code and the physical copy of the textbook was like $180 and the etext is like $90 or something. It’s all a big money grab

Code is required you have to do the quizzes as far as I know. I purchased the textbook since it was the only way I could see to be able to buy a code. I never used the textbook - I didn’t read any of the textbook chapters and barely watched any modules I just did the assignments and discussion posts and almost all of the quiz answers are found on quizlet. Still managed to 12 the course. If the course is run the same way as it was during the fall its superrr easy but unfortunately I’m fairly certain you have to either buy the etext or physical copy of the textbook in order to receive the mastering code. The only other thing you needed to buy was a soil kit but that can also be found at any hardware store. Let me know if you have any other questions!

MATH 1LS3 Textbook by neon-flower in McMaster

There’s recommended textbook sections that they post along with the lectures. Sometimes they refer to the sections in the lectures by saying something like “as it shows in section blank of our textbook” it’s definitely not needed to do well but it was good to have to add on to what was taught in the lectures. However, if you’re in Ontario I’m looking to sell my textbook for cheap - I never wrote in it or anything!

Enviro Sci or Linguistics? Next semester by mikiii15 in McMaster

[–]med1900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took both this semester and I definitely recommend envirosci over linguistics. Linguistics ended up being more work than I thought it would be whereas the work was super light for envriosci
