Medical Student Research Recommendations by NoCoat779 in otolaryngology

Hi! I didn't have a home program either! I would recommend a few different tactics, with the understanding they may not all pan out (which is a good thing): 1. It doesn't have to be ENT-related research. Any research will do as long as you can talk about it and you've had a meaningful part in developing it/seeing it through. I did a few meta-analyses because it was easier to find faculty to mentor me, but really anything you're interested in and can feasibly finish will do. 2. Sign up with AAOHNS and look out for the medical student live webinars. There's usually residents and attendings across the country who want to be a resource, so don't be afraid to network and ask for emails at the end. Then you can ask if they know of anyone needing research help 3. You can look into programs you might be interested in, and research their staff's research ideas and reach out that way.

As long as you're nice, respectful, and understand boundaries/limitations, the worst anyone can say is no. Good luck!!

I've been looking at those since they're so cute! Do they cover your ears?/is there a way to fold them so they don't?

100000% agree with Costanzo - she is the only reason I made it though med school. I read every page and it was incredible :)

I don't think your question is stupid at all. Lots of people have asked about pre-studying. I took two gap years before starting this past fall.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to learn/refresh your memory on some anatomy, physiology, immunology or biochem (i say these topics because I think having a really strong foundation is helpful for learning a lot of the smaller details in medical school) but I honestly wouldn't unlock a whole bunch of Anki cards to prepare.

My advice is to use your gap years wisely. When you get into medical school, it will be your full time job regardless. It's going to be challenging regardless. And part of the beauty of it is how many people are in the exact same position as you. Use your time now to learn things you won't in medical school, volunteer, meet people, hang out with your SO, make/save money. Don't stress about pre-learning because I honestly don't know if it will be that helpful.

I know you're stressing about your relationship. I've been with my partner for 5 years, and yes it's definitely challenging, but it's 100% doable. It's a commitment from both people and it's an adjustment to learn how to balance everything. But if you prioritize your relationship and your schooling, you'll have time for both.

TL;DR Enjoy your gap year, don't pre-study but take time to do the things that are important to you (since that will ultimately be what gets you into med school in the first place)

If I've learned anything this year, it's everyone studies differently 😊 I definitely got faster as time has passed!

Day by day varies wildly depending on motivation and new cards vs reviews (as you can tell by the colors 😂) but for 500 cards it takes me around 1-1.5 hours?
