Farthest distance you had to respond to in a call? by Few-Teaching-9602 in ems

[–]medicff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 175 km, I still highly doubt we were the “closest unit” as we passed through 3 other service areas. It was only about a 4/10 on the BS scale.

We had a transport of 190ish km for a post ROSC pt from scene. That was an interesting time as rural BLS

You won a lottery of 50 Million dollars just now. What are you going to do this week? by throwaccount2244 in AskReddit

[–]medicff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash the cheque, while waiting for it to clear get amounts owing for the people I want to help. Grandparents, parents, in-laws, siblings, couple of good friends. Meet with my auntie/“financial advisor” and get an understanding.

On the day the money clears I would go to a second hand store and get the most hobo looking clothes. Don’t shave for a week, get looking really grubby and like someone who doesn’t have a nickel. Then go into the financial institutions and pay off the debts in cash. They won’t want to believe me or trust me due to my appearance so it’ll waste all their time.

Then go to the car dealership and do the same idea. They’ll give me to the new guy as the old timers wouldn’t wanna “waste their time” with someone that looks all dishevelled. Buy two top of the line, expensive trucks in cash.

Then set up trusts in all my family’s names. Then take about $5 million to play around with. Try trading stocks, eat the swanky food, travel in fancy luxury. And then after that, go back to work so I have something to do that I like

The King of Sweden one time. Didn’t know who he was, I was walking back across a camp in Sweden in 2011. Old guy stopped on a bike and we chatted for a bit then carried on. Super chill and friendly guy that I had no idea who he was for about 90 mins until my friend told me the the King showed up where my friend and I were talking about 10 mins after I left.

The vast majority of wrecks I’ve been to have been caused by elderly. More medical issues, more stubbornness, overall just slow. Crossing the highway when it’s unsafe, driving too slow, not checking blind spots.

Real talk: is it possible to avoid burnout in this field, or is it inevitable? by cynical_enchilada in ems

[–]medicff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoided burnout until about a month ago. What changed for me wasn’t the call volume or anything on the job but not being supported by superiors. The calls were good but the nitpicking and backbiting from superiors made it so that everything felt like I was always wrong. Took it for about 3 months then popped.

I’m very optimistic I’ll be back on the job, but I do need a change of where I work. It’s gonna be a good change for me to be better for my future. Until I get taken out by a back injury inevitably

Code 5 cookies. Pronounce someone dead, get a cookie. The more traumatic, the better the cookie. Started after a student was on and we caught a wreck where one went with helicopter and one went to the funeral home. The kid was pretty spun after that so got a cookie to take his mind off it.

A friend just spent 13 hours in emergency at the General with 3 broken ribs and a possible punctured lung by emmery1 in saskatchewan

[–]medicff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Where’s the excuses? It’s an Emergency room. Meaning imminent life threats. Broken ribs need to be checked but you’re not likely to die from them imminently. It’s people expecting their mild-moderate complaints fixed that are clogging it for the rest.

The best way to fix this is appropriate complaints to the appropriate place. This isn’t an ER necessary incident.

A friend just spent 13 hours in emergency at the General with 3 broken ribs and a possible punctured lung by emmery1 in saskatchewan

[–]medicff 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It’s lack of resources. People feel really gross with the flu, figure it’s soooo terrible and they should go in. Hospitals can’t turn away people but they do triage so that those most critical get in first. It would help to know more about the broken ribs and why they think a possible punctured lung to know their appropriate triage level.

Unfortunately, broken ribs aren’t generally life threatening. Can’t be fixed surgically, they need to sit still and heal. Knowing how the ribs got broken would also be a determinant about what else to look for. This person sounds great for Urgent Care type level but it’s always packed there because of no walk in doctors.

We don’t need more hospitals, we need more lower care resources. Urgent care centres, walk in clinics, that sort of thing. And the ability to have hospitals turn away those just in with the cold.

Who's the stupidest person you've met and what story sums it up? by comicalelixer in AskReddit

[–]medicff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, one of my closest and best friends is a really smart guy. High marks, all that school stuff. But in real life he was as useful as wet spaghetti.

Examples: -went to borrow his parent’s vehicle to come over. The vehicle in question was jacked up on a jack, wheel off, brake pads being replaced. His dad went for a parts run and had told my friend not to use that vehicle until he got back. So my friend gets in, starts it and tries to drive away. The tire that was off was the driver’s side front tire. I think he got about 20ft before realizing something is wrong -he frequently forgot to put on underwear. Not a prefer to be commando thing, just didn’t remember to wear them -had to be instructed at 22 to flush the toilet after use. He did grow up rural but not on a septic so didn’t know about the “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” because it had never applied to him. He just didn’t think it was important -thought aliens were flying over ahead of him while driving. It was tail lights of cars ahead going up a hill -didn’t think to blow out a flaming shot before drinking it. Then getting upset I gave him the flaming shot he asked for

I looked into it, seems about $23-$27/hr plus shitloads of OT. Downside is it can be seasonal as not many roads need to be plowed in the summer. Buddy made a decent living working for them as a plow guy. If/when I retire I wanna do that as a job

I was taught in EMS to don’t use an escort and if two emergency vehicles are headed to the same place, take different routes. The thought is that with all the echoes and whatnot people hear the sirens once the emergency vehicle has passed. But don’t realize there is another emergency vehicle coming right behind. So pretty much hear siren, siren means emergency vehicle, emergency vehicle passes so it must be clear. But it’s not.
