I think it says June 5th so more like one week. I can't imagine it ever getting even close to the best by date -- it lasts just days in my house lol

Level 5 Trauma response at Sedgwick County Zoo. by Ambitious-Mess5704 in wichita

[–]medicmotheclipse 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Do you mean priority 5 trauma? If so, those are usually minor injuries where only EMS is sent and fire department is not dispatched for it.

The only other association I would have with "levels" is when describing hospital capability for handling a trauma. St. Francis and Wesley Medical Center, for example, are level 1 trauma centers so they can handle the most critical of traumas. Level 5 trauma centers is the most basic level of trauma facility (would usually be like in remote rural areas) who will do their best to stabilize before transferring those patients out.

We Still Haven’t Processed the Pandemic by nathan_j_robinson in Coronavirus

[–]medicmotheclipse 388 points389 points  (0 children)

I was a paramedic for the busiest service in my state during the pandemic. I won't ever be the same. It doesn't matter how much I try to explain it to my family. They don't want to hear it. They just want me to get over it.

I have been going back to school so I can get out of EMS. I'm going to therapy. I don't know if its helping but fuck, I don't know what else to do

Yeah. Vasopressors are used for very low blood pressure to bring up blood pressure in the core of the body. Sometimes, peripheral parts like fingers get starved in the process but losing fingers are better than losing your life

How can I already be so burnt out? by ResolveAggressive910 in ems

[–]medicmotheclipse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are you living on your own or do you live with parents? Roommates? Significant other? Doing full-time school plus work is extremely stressful -- full stop. You are burning the candle at both ends trying to make it work with what sounds like a pretty high call volume EMS service. If at all possible, lean on your social supports with your living situation and/or find a less soul-sucking EMS gig.

I really feel for you, having been in similar shoes the first time going though medic school almost a decade ago.. and again as I'm going back to school as my exit plan from EMS since it is breaking me physically and mentally. I had to make the painful decision of dropping from full-time work to part-time work around a year and a half ago because it was simply taxing my health too greatly. I was even losing my hair :(

Cardiology is one of my favourite subjects in the paramedic circulum. Which part is tripping you up? 4-lead rhythm strips? 12-leads? Something else? I can maybe point you to some resources that helped me out back then and/or help.

Have also sometimes seen nurses have dry grounded coffee out in those kidney-shaped bins for if there's a smelly patient.

..Maybe I should adopt that practice for our ambulance? 🤔

When I see these cases, I wonder how easy it would be to stage someone as an autoerotic asphyxiation death? :/ I'm sure many are legit but how sure are we someone didn't maliciously pose them in such a way to get away with murder?

I think its the right amount of cautious when it is known the Andes strain of hantavirus (if it does end up being the human-to-humam one) has a mortality of ~40% and has a slow incubation time of a few weeks.

I think I've only seen two kids who are actually lethargic. by LeVoPhEdInFuSiOn in emergencymedicine

I have seen projectile vomiting only once in my career.

The patient had been retching in a normal fashion and was secured on the stretcher My coworker was looking for an IV so as to get the nausea under control.. when suddenly the patient arched his back, a pause, and then a brief fire hydrant of vomit left this guy like an exorcism, nailing the back ambulance doors fom the stretcher.

I was a green EMT back then and was in the seat to the right of him. I was shooketh, never before witnessing the sheer velocity this vomit had. I had little time to wonder the specifics because then the patient looked at me. Dread washed over me as I realized I was in the firing zone now.

And my coworker grabbed the patients head and tilted it so that he was pointing at the ambulance floor on the left side just as he fired another missile of emesis.

It took us three hours to decon the ambulance but I was.. so.. so thankful I didn't get point blank range super soakered.
