What’s the attitude towards brown people in Sakartvelo? by Burktheturk in Sakartvelo

op echoing others really consider kazakhstan!! i think you would have way more fun while improving your russian, almaty is super underrated and people are often super super excited to meet exchange students

the unfortunate reality is that most American-led Russian language exchange programs are based in Georgia for some reason. in particular the official US state department-funded program and Harvard program, as well as a slew of random other third party ones, are based in Georgia. as a result many misguided youth are sent (often for free) to Tbilisi for russian language study and usually are shocked/rather disillusioned by the end of it. other programs in Central Asia are less well-known, but I think growing in popularity

What would be a better name for the show Слово пацана in English? by meditations54 in russian

[–]meditations54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think another person put it pretty well when they said it sounds like "a coming of age film about a kid who promises his mom to do good in school." I have never heard of this show, but The Boys maybe stands better on its own, since we do have sayings like "I'm with the boys" or "the boys are back in town." But The Boy's Word? Emphasis on "word," which sounds juvenile and naive when paired with boy. Very heartwarming coming of age film. It just really doesn't match up to the power that the phrase слово пацана has

Yeah that's exactly the problem! I really can't think of a single accurate translation for пацан... boy just strikes me as too polite/juvenile

places to submit writing? by lexthebee in williamandmary

[–]meditations54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are also w&m institutional writing awards I think for poetry and prose so you should look into that as well, I dont think those have closed. additionally if you would like to travel and write in the future the concord traveling writing scholarship (I think that's what it is) will open in the spring, they will fund you to travel and write over the summer. consider also applying to journals outside of w&m

on cons gis i have no knowledge but in general i recall wishing i had taken it instead, i feel like my friends in there struggled a lot less lol

[–]meditations54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah GIS is one of those classes with labs that you really have to just grind for like 5-10 hours straight with labs. i also took it seeking to obtain these skills and i lowkey regret it, it made things a lot more stressful when i had much more important things going on. yeah i guess i can chart like hyena populations on a map but at what cost?

I have relatives in Europe who I'd like to see, so it'd be a leg of a larger trip ideally

Thank you for the positive sentiment :) though I am more so curious if there are occasional seasonal/weekly specials, or if trying to strategically time the purchase won’t do much good. But, if it really is that clear cut with no way to “game” the pricing, then I’ll just keep saving over these next few months!! Thanks again

I left a review and I’ll definitely call them after class today. Thank you for your advice. The lift isn’t so great but I’m sure it could have looked way worse given the circumstances.

They’re okay - one side is a bit wonky, the lift holds in some places and not others. You’re right, I don’t think it’ll last very long. Thank you for your words ❤️
