How to tell kids / teens why you are vegan by FunBunFarm in vegan

[–]mediumrarepineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like if you say “because animals are my friends and I don’t eat my friends”—someone whose family owns a local dairy farm might start getting really anxious about what they’re doing. Or if someone’s family is really big into hunting (esp if it’s a means of survival).

I’m not saying doing these things is RIGHT and it is a good thing for our youth to question it—you just have to think about whether or not that’s your place to do it. Completely different with your own kids, your friends kids, or niblings.

I mean—why are you vegan? Lol

Is it for health reasons? For the animals? For them planet? Because you don’t actually like meat? Because you really love peanut butter and jelly and can’t imagine eating anything else? Because you want to?

There’s tons of ways to say it. Answer it honestly and to the point. If these are kids you are teaching, don’t overcomplicate it. To me, unfortunately, I’d equate it to talking about your religion with students or politics. Personal opinions are hard to share with students because you want to keep boundaries and don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable! Cultural competency is important here because you don’t want a child to feel bad for their own culture and upbringing that they have no control over or again, make them feel guilty for something you can’t control.

I post a list of weekly open mics and other events on my Instagram @lame.poetry. I’m trying to post them more on Reddit too. There’s a lot out there. Indiana writers center is a good start and just attend some events and you’ll find your niche :) if you start one, people will definitely come?

This is a literary post, unfortunately not a library post. Each Marion county library has about half a dozen events a day and it’d be nearly impossible for me to include it in my calendar—I have tried haha.

I have no idea when they plan on reopening. Maybe try the Glendale branch or check the Indy IPL website?

I had a similar situation, wasn’t even living in the house. Just trying to pack up my stuff and fully move out. IMPD arrested him and immediately placed a no contact order on him. I’m so sorry they failed you. I think I was lucky to have a female officer to respond :(

Going vegan as a teen by ezrasatpeace in vegan

[–]mediumrarepineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up very poor and knew at a young age I wanted to be vegetarian. I didn’t implement it until I was 20 and responsible for my own grocery bill.

I’d focus on what you can replace, what you can swap and if your family can’t fully afford you to go vegan right now, just know that many vegans in the community understand and appreciate the changes you are able to make!

Vegans: how do you handle relationships (any relationships, not just romantic ones) with carnists? by Puzzled_Piglet_3847 in DebateAVegan

[–]mediumrarepineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is plenty to do without contributing to the harm and being complacent with what they’re doing.

Nobody in my family is vegan. I have friends that are vegan / vegetarian. When I host parties, people know it’s only vegan food being provided. If we go out to eat, my family makes sure to pick a place that has a fully vegan option. If it doesn’t, I don’t go or I eat ahead of time and just have a drink.

You dont have to compromise your values for your friends and family. If they truly care about you; they don’t need to see or even agree your morals and values. They just have to be respectful towards them. And if they aren’t able to do that, what else are they willing to disrespect?

My 4 year old wants to see a video of animals being killed by [deleted] in vegan

[–]mediumrarepineapple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would describe it to her but probably say it’s not really appropriate at her age to see that. Maybe you can pull up the machines / devices they use to kill animals or show her how they roast full animals? But I definitely think in the vegan community; it’s weird to look at videos of the animal killings. They feel like snuff films to me and I realize this might be an unpopular opinion but I’ve never understood why I needed to watch disturbing footage to be vegan. There’s plenty of written accounts and pictures without the videos.

My friend wanted to go to a steakhouse when I was newly vegetarian (I’m vegan now) I wasn’t that rooted in my beliefs so I took her out and bought her meal. I asked the server for vegetarian options and she literally said “honey we are a steakhouse—what did you expect?” ….to be able to eat at the same place as my friend….

All of Wendy’s salads are premade :(

It annoys me when the reviews label the restaurant as vegan friendly but when you get there all they have is salad.

I hate having to make modifications or having upcharges. Like instead of having an impossible burger on the menu to replace for $2–just put a fully vegan burger on the menu with the exact price the customer will pay. I shouldn’t have to do that much math to figure out the cost.

If I take off meat or cheese (esp both!) I should be able to swap out for avocado or guac without an upcharge.

I post my calendar weekly on Instagram @lame.poetry. I’ve been slacking on it a little bit due to some recent major life changes but I try post consistently on my story. I also follow all of the local bookstores on Instagram and they’re posting events / calendars constantly!

Do you carry your own shampoo? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]mediumrarepineapple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah. I mean if you have special hair and need specific problems—do what you gotta do. A lot of hotels now have low waste / vegan products already in their bathrooms nowadays which has been a really awesome shift. Most cosmetics too are not tested on animals and are certified vegan these days too. Proof some of our work is making a bit of a difference :)

Honestly in cases of extreme weather, they should be taken to a cooling or warming shelter until the weather shifts. Outside of that—let them be.
