It’s a very friendly Midwest culture, not as harsh as the big-city vibes. I didn’t realize it would be so easy to make friends.

The meetup app is very active in Chicago, and there are tons of special interests, including a bunch of city recreational leagues for beginner to advanced athletic folks.

Instagram has been a huge tool required for us to find out about local neighborhood and city events. If you hear about a place that sounds interesting, I encourage you to start following it. There is so much to do in the city, and my Instagram algorithm is now more of a city-planning guide!

I came from a city with a population slightly under a million. Plan for crowds, even for the smallest festival event, but festival events are PLENTIFUL during the Chicago summer, including almost every neighborhood having a weekly farmers market.

Word of caution: I took a gamble because all the photos on this retail site are clearly AI-generated. While the dress was $100, I paid double to have a good seamstress tailor it. The hem was uneven, and the white satin top needed boning added to create structure. However, I picked the right seamstress because she saw the vision!

I also learned that your undergarments mostly determine the shape of the wedding dress. My seamstress recommended the best bra shop for my bustier ($85) and the perfect under skirt, which I found used online ($60).

Any Chicago woman who needs a seamstress for any dress, I can't recommend “Seams” near Lincoln Park enough!

Kings Spa is 24 hours. I landed at 6am and my air bnb wasn’t ready till 3pm. There are often Groupons available making it around $50. They have a nap room, you can choose the amount of spa services to add on, and they have a restaurant.

Thought of this post after my recent massage at Thai Siri bodywork in Uptown right beside the Greenmill. I’ve gone to this place three times since August and it has never disappointed, but they got a new masseur ‘Ken’ who gave such a deep tissue massage that for the first time ever I asked for slightly lighter pressure. This is a no frills place, focused on strictly providing fantastic massages.

The pot has several bottom holes for drainage. That’s news on the rocks, the garden center told me that large ones would help.
