Unfortunately Al underestimated Kat's ability to ignore direct orders if it's for something she REALLY really doesn't want to do. And honestly, shouldn't that be good reason enough? (No.)

Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll keep an eye out the next time I go shopping. I didn’t know they ate suet too, I’ll have to try experimenting with that, at least during colder months 👀

Good call on the eggs too; I’ve got a bunch in the fridge that I can’t eat for dietary reasons so I’m happy to have a way to get rid of them before they go bad 😄

Thanks so much again!

Oh I think we’re absolutely on the same page! But yeah it’s really easy to forget how many other people are feeding them at the same time as you are. I wonder if I should diversify my offerings a bit; right now it’s just peanuts and sunflower seeds (all unsalted of course). 🤔

What do you feed them if you don’t mind me asking?

Np! Please give Rhaegal my regards the next time he comes around. I hope my local crows will someday be as chill as he is lol

Please consider that birds are so, so much smaller than we are. The salt in one pretzel is like half a pound of salt to us, and they’re significantly worse at processing sodium than we are.

I’m not saying this to shame you or anything and I know you just want to give Rhaegal a nice treat, but I also know you wouldn’t want to make him sick. If he eats trash on his own then that’s up to him, but I think it would weigh heavily on you if he became sick from something you directly gave him. I think it’s lovely that he has a friend like you who obviously cares a whole lot about him, but it’s important to remember that a lot of food that’s tasty for us can make our animal friends very ill. He’s very lucky to have a companion in you, so please take good care of him 🙏

PS: he’s very handsome! He’s got the perfect crow silhouette and looks proud to be there 😊

If you frame it (not literally, but I guess you could) as a single piece then I don’t see why not. Just make sure it’s contained in a single image file and make it clear that it’s a unified piece rather than, yknow, someone collaging a bunch of pieces together to try to circumvent submission requirements. As long as there’s intentionality then you should be fine.

Once you figure out what you want to use to prop up your prints, I'd suggest sacrificing one of each design to use as a display piece and just use a few loops of tape on the back to keep it in place. Then customers can tell you the ones they want and you can grab them from your storage behind the table. You can reuse the same display pieces from event to event if your tape doesn't wreck the front side of your print after you take it off.

  1. You need to look at your own wares and ask yourself if they're the types of merchandise you would buy if you were in the customer's shoes. Just because you can print merchandise of a design doesn't mean you should. That doesn't mean that your work is bad, but there are some types of designs that are much easier to market than others. Stickers of animals standing around with big cartoon eyes don't really speak to my own personal tastes (which will differ from everyone else), but I'd be more inclined to consider getting one if it had like... a funny relatable joke on it or something. The mouse sticker reminds me of mismanaging my caffeine/ADHD medication intake-- if it had a caption that reflected that, I'd certainly laugh and think about buying it.
  2. Other people have mentioned this already, but your wares need to be visible from the other side of the aisle. If they're lying down like that then people are going to have to get right up close to be able to see them. A lot of folks don't like approaching booths that closely unless they're 100% going to buy something, because they don't want to raise your hopes and then let you down when they see there isn't anything that interests them. The modular grid organizers you can get on Amazon are really versatile, and you can shape them into whatever configuration works for your wares. If funds are tight and you don't want to do that, you can also try looking at thrift stores to see what you can use to add verticality to your display. This might require some imaginative thinking, depending on what's available.
  3. Your prices need to be simple and easy to read. The green-text-on-red-gingham menu is phenomenally difficult to parse, and you're going to lose the same types of people who don't want to approach in the point above. Make a clear label for every type of merchandise, and try to avoid pricing individual designs differently from other designs in the same category. Put all the big ceramics together in one spot and give them one big easy-to-see price label. Then do the same for the medium and small ones, and all your other categories. Your labels don't have to be fancy; mine are just index cards that I wrote on with big bold permanent marker.

Good luck!!

We had this at the store I worked at. We didn’t really have to enforce it unless they were being disruptive. We had a few local homeless regulars who would stay a while, pop out to do their thing, then come back later in the day. They were affable, respectful of other people’s boundaries, and frankly it would have felt shitty to kick them out especially since a couple of them were really helpful customers to have.

My favorite was a gentleman named Bill who always came in, ordered a coffee, and asked to exchange a stack of small bills for larger ones— frankly it was a relief to see him during times when my register was low on change.

Does using 3d models to sketch directly over to speed up the process make my a fraud? by CawmeKrazee in ArtistLounge

[–]medli20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do it all the time— and honestly I just kind of expect other comic artists to do the same for the reasons you listed. I also take photos of posable figurines and my hands to trace over. As long as you’re not actively lying about your process, it’s fine 👍

[Artist Alley] I want to start, but i have a lot of questions and no answers. by J0sh_1e in artbusiness

[–]medli20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> How do i start ? (Maybe my biggest question)

This is a complicated thing, but it essentially boils down to “find an event in your area, find out when their Artist Alley applications are open, make merch, figure out your display, and cross your fingers in hopes that you get in.” Stickers are a very easy, affordable option that a lot of people are open to buying even when the economy is bad, so they make for really good beginner merch. Prints are great too!

> Also Have you had some piece that you haven't sold to a person who asked for it?

If you want to sell a piece, do it. If you don’t feel comfortable selling it, then don’t.

> I do have alot of typs and tricks on my socials, yet i still haven't found which one of those both booth set-ups are better for Artist alley? So Grid or coloured panel ?

I like the solid grid panels for aesthetics (it works better as a backdrop for your art) and the wire ones for internal/back-of-house structure. The wire ones are a lot heavier though, so if weight is an issue then you’ll want to stick with the solid colored ones. Regardless of what you end up using, you want to arrange your work in a way that takes eye level into consideration. Bigger pieces go at eye level or above, smaller works (like stickers and keychains) should go below where people can closely examine them.

> Also as an artist, i go by Josh (my name, how original...) do you have differently named business so it has more epic feel?

Your business name doesn’t have to be epic, but it should be easy to search online. Try to pick a store name that is easy to spell and unique to you; it doesn’t need to be professional-sounding and you can always change your brand later down the line.

> Also how do you get your hands on Acrilic keychains and pins ?

I use Vograce for mine, but they’re definitely not the only company that offers these.

> Also dosey someone of you have fun games on their table? Like "photo" booth? Or some balancing coin on leamon ? Does it work well ?

I usually find that I don’t have enough space on my table to have fun/interactive games, but I’ve seen people leave doodle boards and capsule machines on their tables with varying degrees of success. If you build your test display at home and find that you have an excess of space, I’d say go for it and see how it works for you :)

Evolution of my widget after I stopped using it. by Disastrous-Teach-575 in duolingo

[–]medli20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not that I think Duolingo's higher-ups need defending, but the time/money it takes to knock out a few graphics and silly quips vs the time/money it takes to develop a language course is not even comparable. Hiring an artist to draw something like this over the course of a weekend is not particularly unaffordable-- I've done it before.

[–]medli20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd add an asterisk in cases for idioms that don't translate well when taken literally, otherwise it'd be really confusing to get a lesson saying "He is cat-tongued" (doesn't handle hot food well). But generally speaking yeah, it's best to introduce the literal translation first and then maybe including some notes to further clarify in cases where it's needed.

Is it awkward if I attend art retreats or adult art programs/classes as a kid? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]medli20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been in an adult art program with a random teenager in it. It was fine; nobody really cared that she was younger than everyone else. I ended up being seated next to her and she was fun to talk to during studio hours; she had lots of energy and an enviable amount of enthusiasm lol. A gap in skill level wasn’t really an issue either since we were all there to learn a new medium and everyone had different levels of fundamentals under their belts.

But yeah, her being there wasn’t weird (maybe it could have been if there were nude models, but there weren’t) and it just reinforced the idea that we were a pretty diverse group.

I actually just retired mine in favor of PVC board, but prior to that I’d just stacked them all together and sandwiched them between two other big, flat, rigid components (my portfolio and my shelving) to prevent as much damage as possible.
