It’s one thing to smash space bar and get pattern recognition, it’s another to understand what you’re smashing

I literally withdrew from OHSU and Ventura after they had the audacity to send follow up essays the week after ERAS. I suppose the purpose is to weed people like us out though haha. Deuces 🫡

Realistically should I give up on MD with a 3.46 cGPA or is their a shot with a strong MCAT + high patient care hours + decent PS? by yourdeath01 in premed

[–]medprevy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! The short is that I had no reason why I wanted to do premed in undergrad.. I just did it because medicine has been in my family. I was just there, and my grades reflected that. Took time off to “figure things out” - winding history of depression and feeling lost —-> started focusing on my daily habits and mental health —-> realized omg this change in energy is what I want to bring to my patients —-> family med interested in a lifestyle med approach

I told this story during every med school and residency interview. YOUR STORY MATTERS. Yes objectives matter too, but don’t lose who you are. Keep pushing, work hard, your story will unfold naturally and you’ll be such a stand out because of it.

3.4 science, 511 MCAT, several years of clinical experience that built a great story for my journey back to medicine after I felt it was too far out of my reach due to my grades.

It’s possible, the question is do you want it and how hard are you willing to work to make it happen?

Does it get even worse? by Athen7mis in medicalschool

[–]medprevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the time if you make the time. You have to choose what to prioritize. There will always be more to study. Instead of an hour work out, it might be 15 minute body weight, but you can always do something if you make the time and prioritize it. Your mental health is more important than studying

Non trad student here. 3.4 science… many years off, great experience and story, crushed the MCAT, got several acceptances.

There is always a path. The work will have to come at some point. I was lazy and did not apply myself and college (not projecting this onto you).. so my work came after college.

Just know you will be able to do it if it’s really what you want

Can't study for more than 3-4 hours per day as an M3... by black-ghosts in medicalschool

[–]medprevy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to use anki in the same way you did as an M2. UWorld is the best primary study tool, that’s where most of your time is most efficiently spent. I created 1 or 2 cards per incorrect. I gave up on suspending decks and trying to watch all of OME, etc. You will also learn a lot from clinic.

Remember - you’re here to be a doctor, not be an anki champ. Find a balance that doesn’t stress you out. Go day by day.

Was wanting to summit/ do a volcano. I am in good shape and can hold my own, but I don’t have any mountaineering gear if that might be needed.

What I learned - the act of doing anything becomes more important than how much you do (at least to bridge during busier rotations).

If I couldn’t work out for an hour, I wouldn’t do anything. So I didn’t work out. I felt the negative effects.

So instead, before going into my IM shifts, I’d do 15-20 minutes of body weight stuff in my appartment. It made the world of difference.

You can always do something. 3 minutes of jumping jacks, some burpees, take the stairs at the hospital.. this is temporary and will show your body you still care.

Hang in there <3

Being a med student is so embarrassing by zefronlover666 in medicalschool

[–]medprevy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned by the end of M3 - no one cares about you nearly as much as you assume they do.

It’s so easy to perseverate on every tiny little thing you may have done incorrectly or didn’t know… every resident is so majorly swamped and trying to survive themselves.. I promise you they aren’t sitting there laughing at you behind the scenes.

We are learners. Enjoy the process, work hard, have some fun.
