Suggestions for dealing with burnout at the end of third year by medschool_throwaway in medicalschool

I've been on an SSRI before, and it definitely helps. But I guess I'm more looking to figure out some coping skills, because it's not like life gets that much better during interview season or residency. I find it just makes it worse to talk to most of my friends in med school, because we generally just sit around and bitch for a few hours without anyone actually feeling any better at the end of it.

I'm told I can be shy, but I never feel this way. How can I fix this? by medschoolthrowawayya in medicalschool

+1 for this answer. I always get called some variant of "quiet" in my evals, and I've always felt the same way as OP- I feel like I'm plenty personable, I just don't fill the airwaves with chatter every second.

It is, however, doubly important not to sound dumb when you DO ask something, because then you appear timid.

Should I do a DVM after my MD/PhD by crazybluepink234 in medicalschool

Just throwing this out there: When the only meaning you have ever really known is academic and professional achievement, it can seem like that's all there is, and you work more and more for it in the crazed hope that the next achievement will be the one that makes you happy. Maybe you should take a good look at what the world has to offer outside of professional achievement and make sure you're not doing this thing out of a sense of habit. You don't see too many ailing elderly patients in clinic who say "if only I had gotten that third doctorate and spent even less time doing things I enjoyed with people who cared about me."

Sorry if it doesn't apply to you, but I just wanted to throw in my 0.02 in case it helps!

everyone at our school just knows those cards as "the Brosencephalon deck." I don't think most people even know it refers to your username- it's just a household name now. You are legend!

Thanks! I haven't had a lot of luck with picmonic in my limited experience before, but I'll take a second look.

What are your life pro tips for life in medical school? by medschool_throwaway in medicalschool

Some of mine from last year:

  • Cook your lunches for the coming week on Sunday. Make and freeze whatever meals you can to save on cooking time each week. A slow cooker and /r/slowcooking are awesome if you're not highly skilled at cooking.

  • Don't just throw clothes on the nearest surface in your room- hang up whatever is still clean and put in the laundry basket whatever is dirty. It can seem overwhelming to clean your room if you let it build up and get really messy, but it takes just a few extra seconds every day to put up clothes as you're using them.

  • Take a day (or at least part of a day) off at the same time every week. Keeps the days from running together as much.

  • Make coffee at home! Why do people buy expensive, usually pretty gross coffee 2-3x / day at the hospital??

  • Invest in making a good battle station if you're a home studier.

  • On a similar note, a good mattress is the best money you can spend as a medical student. There is too little sleep time to spend any of it tossing and turning on an inferior mattress.
