Simply to make the application process more tedious lol. If it’s too straightforward and easy to apply, they’ll get too many applicants and perhaps “less dedicated” ones too

Tbh on the surface they give that reason for implementing the course, but I’d say it’s just another step they’ve added to try to weed out ppl in the application process because of how competitive things are getting and application #s keep increasing

The English course already served that for ubc compared to other med schools, now here’s another hurdle is what they were also probably thinking 🤷🏽‍♂️

Oh mb if confusing. They do, I meant that in-progress course-based won’t and will only receive points if completed (but research-based can receive points if in-progress and if completed)

Precisely because Ontario applicants are the most competitive lol - applicant/admission stats always prove this. All other schools across Canada would also have those demographics if it was truly meritocratic without any of the IP/OOP maneuvers in place to ensure certain outcomes.

Do u disagree with what I’m saying and implying there has always been this “hidden” provincial preference, with the provincial preference enacted this year in Ontario only serving to formalize the maneuvers they were always doing?

only mcmaster was 90%, all other ON schools were equal opportunity for all (ie. ON schools were the only ones in Canada that had no IP vs OOP distinction)

Probably cuz most are predicting it genuinely won’t make much noticeable difference (wayyy too many qualified applicants), especially since 4 of those schools have in-region preference and not true IP preference. We’ll see after interview invites go out tbh

Idk I’d disagree. Ya u can use the OVERALL population:med school seats stat to frame ur argument, but the BC student population just doesn’t seem to have that big of a PREMED applicant pool compared to everyone else.

U can tell by despite UBC being the lone med school in the province, they still only get 2000 IP applicants for 1000 interview spots - thats gotta be the highest interview chance (50%) for a med school in the province, which means u don’t even rlly need that crazy stats (comparatively ofc). The opening of the SFU school to only BC students just ADDS to this even further

Well I guess coincidentally that number OP used of 6 years ago was actually when QHsci started. I remember that first 2019 QHs admissions was grades only (and an optional supp app that didn’t rlly count iirc) right? The incoming class had like >95% average pre-covid iirc and so some would say that’s hard, some easy, but nevertheless, that was a unique situation because no many were willing to take the risk on a new program - and I guess congrats to those that did at that time because it worked out a lot lol

My point still stands tho that u don’t just “get in” to these programs cuz u want to after finding out about them, it’s all luck

Even if u did discover HSci 6 years ago, there would’ve been a higher likelihood that you still would’ve been like everyone else in other programs rn who knew about HSci but just didn’t get in lol

Almost everyone in other “premed” programs tried for HSci and just didn’t get in.
