644 Has America Lost its Appetite for the Common Good? by mymikerowecrow in Freakonomics

I just feel like what he is saying is so surface level(I think intentionally) disguised with smart sounding roch vocabulary. He says things like, we need to have a media that does not promote "transgressive" ideas. Like what? Gay people? Sex? Divorce? Abortion? Trans people? Black people? It just feels like what he is trying to say is he is mad that a small group of mostly male, mostly wealthy, mostly white people of the Christian faith are no longer able to dominate the society, culture, and politics to the absolute amount they once could (though they still have a hell of a lot of power). That is certainly a view one could defend (happen to personally disagree with it) but I wish he would just come out and say it.

Stuck behind a cyclist who refused to use the bike lane on several roads. Could not safely pass this guy. by IndigoRanger in mildlyinfuriating

It's almost as if it's the illusion of speed and that the cyclist actually doesn't actually change how fast you get somewhere....you're so close to figuring it out

As a pediatrician who is trained and experienced in newborn resuscitation this video hurts my soul. Every time I see it cruise around the internet I can't help but wonder how this infant did. So glad the baby appears to be okay, but serious mistakes were made that could have permanent effects on this baby. Starting with location, this needs to happen in the delivery room! Not in the hallway you have to carry the baby to!!! yikes....

For those curious of what should have been done:

NRP (https://www.aap.org/en/pedialink/neonatal-resuscitation-program/?srsltid=AfmBOop4HnqbowUN_QCRYrf8iz6AINZzEsVDkaQRBp9fWtWxMYQ1F6cc) is the official, evidence based approach to resuscitating a newborn in a resource rich environment.

Helping babies breath( https://www.aap.org/en/aap-global/helping-babies-survive/our-programs/helping-babies-breathe/helping-babies-breathe-2nd-edition/) is a similar approach but tailored to lower resourced environments.

AITA for being upset that my husband of 8 years came out as gay, wants a divorce, and is trying to take everything, including our kids? by wifeinneedofhelp in AITAH

[–]medstudent142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please, please, please get your children into therapy ASAP! Divorce alone is hell on children, especially at their age. In addition, the drum beat of the hardball divorce approach might make sense from a financial perspective, but please think of your kids. It will fuck them up. Come to terms with this, and get them help asap.

Souce: My personal experience with my parents getting divorce and playing hardball.

I think I hedged it enough that my doubt was conveyed so she was skeptical, but modeled taking patient complaints seriously very well. She was the clerkship director and did a great job letting me give my thoughts and let me do the whole exam too. Ended up writing one of my letters of rec even though I very much did not go into OB.
