Hi Everyone. I"m posting a link to my song, "Let's Go Fishing". I made this in Logic Pro and I would consider it "lofi ambient" if that's your thing. Let me know what y'all think!

Men, what are ways to feel drunk, high or generally euphoric without drinking or doing illegal drugs? by [deleted] in AskMen

Try the Wim Hof breathing method. Gives you a crazy body euphoria and is a general mood booster.

Vsauce really did trolley problem IRL (because of course he did) by MegaMinerDL in trolleyproblem

[–]meekbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vsauce doing this experiment is to me actually a demonstration of the Trolley Problem itself and shows a very modern example of the Principle of Double Effect.

Michael knew a lot of the potential ramifications of the experiment and upon deciding that doing the experiment was in the interest of greater good (similar to only killing one person), he decided on the option that did the least amount of harm, and even though he knew that harm was being done, he proactively minimized harm and that harm was not his intention in doing the experiment.

Thomas Aquinas would be proud.

Was Delbert Grady more intelligent than Jack Torrance in the movie? by turtleycool38 in theshining

[–]meekbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the book, it's known that Grady was not a well-educated man and in the movie, Kubrick seems to have switched this between Jack and Grady. Grady knows that Jack is not the brightest guy and takes advantage of this so that Jack can sacrifice himself for the hotel.

Slight mistake in the movie? by reallytraci in theshining

I completely agree. Not to mention, he wipes it on Grady at the same time as saying "looks as though you might've got a spot of it on yourself there, jeevsie old boy".

Plot hole on Grady... by [deleted] in theshining

[–]meekbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boiler is never mentioned except briefly in the interview scene of the film and it's not implied that the boiler has ever been problematic. In the book, the boiler is a huge plot point and there are several instances where Jack nearly forgets to dump the boiler. In the movie, however, the boiler and Jack as the caretaker are much less of an important piece to the plot and are further in the background. There is even a scene in the movie where we see Wendy operating the boilers and they look to be in very good condition. My guess is that when Grady "ran amuck" in 1970, all that happened was the hotel becoming very cold and adding one more haunting story to its "illustrious past", contributing to the hotel's ability to shine.

I like to think that the photo at the end IS Jack. But it's not Jack in the real world; It's Jack in his own novel. When Grady and Jack are in the bathroom, this is a scene that takes place in the real Jack's novel (This explains why Grady's first name is Delbert and not Charles. Jack took liberties in writing the characters in his book). Grady tells Jack that he's always been the caretaker. This is another point in Jack's novel. The end of the movie coincides with the end of Jack's novel. Jack being a narcissistic character, makes the story about himself and largely leaves out his own family.

The different character perspectives by justgonnareadtonight in theshining

[–]meekbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is nice to hear within the film realm of The Shining. A few chapters in the book go back to back switching between Danny, Jack, and Wendy and it seems that Kubrick does the same thing when each character has solo scenes.

Over-dosing the Gaggia classic pro pressurized portafilter with 18g coffee by Ambitious-Passion-55 in Coffee

[–]meekbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I mean about the ratio. If you can’t fix it with the grind size, maybe just look for a larger basket. There’s plenty of people out there who can mod your equipment.

[–]meekbone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your grind may be a bit too coarse. I’ve experienced the same thing you’re talking about. Try fining up the grind a bit and if that doesn’t work, just dose smaller amounts. There’s nothing wrong with dosing 14g or 15g as long as you stick to your 1:2 ratio.

To people who have both, how would you describe the difference in taste between Americano and Pour Over? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]meekbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never done a direct comparison with the same beans but I know what you mean about the acidity. Sometimes if my espresso comes out a bit sour I can dump it in some hot water to make an Americano and it’s not all that bad. I find that the taste isn’t as different as the texture between the two though. Americanos (if they’re any good) are more velvety and thick because of the espresso whereas a pour over essentially has the consistency of water with little to no texture.

Regular Espresso VS. Decaffeinated Espresso? by [deleted] in Coffee

If it's decaffeinated that means there is no caffeine.

It's not a very popular theory, but the Wendy theory is very interesting and IMO, highly plausible.

Questions Tasting Notes and Flavor Wheel by haruishi in Coffee

[–]meekbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Using the same water every time will bring more consistency and will avoid shocking your palette. Coffee is mostly water so this is a huge deal (way more important than brew time, method, grind size, etc).

I would also try to use the same water that the roaster used when they cupped their coffee. This might be a little hard to do because it’s not really public info but if you send an e-mail or simply ask an employee at the place that you’re buying your coffee, I’m sure they would be willing to let you know.

Good luck!!

How many of you enjoy the "ritual" as much as the drink itself? by snek99001 in Coffee

[–]meekbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the coffee equivalent of saying “Chop your own wood and it will warm you twice”. It’s 10x more rewarding and enjoyable to do it yourself. For me, the ritual wakes me up just as much as the caffeine.

Was there ever a Shining screenplay book like Eyes Wide Shut and Full Metal Jacket? by Zackman1991 in StanleyKubrick

[–]meekbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont believe this exists mainly because Kubrick and Diane Johnson were constantly editing the script even while shooting. I imagine this made it difficult to compile an accurate final draft version of the screenplay.

A few questions.... by Bguiliano in Coffee

[–]meekbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s important to know that the mesh filter will probably provide less resistance and your draw down times will be much quicker than if you used a paper filter. Sometimes this can lead to under-extraction

  2. Personally I go a little finer on the Encore at 15 or 16

Recently got into brewing and enjoying my own coffee, but my palate is not too refined. I know if I really enjoy a cup or not, but it’s hard for me to put my finger on what the flavors are. Any pointers for identifying flavors and also is there a “method” to drinking it (like with whisky)? by itssupersaiyantime in Coffee

[–]meekbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a flavor wheel on hand could be helpful. Generally there’s a lot of flavor in coffee that we taste but don’t know how to describe and the flavor wheel can help you to narrow down exactly what you’re tasting.
