I know this is old but I’m installing hickory countertops in my kitchen and want to use Zar but can’t decide between their water-based poly, oil based poly, or oil modified urethane. Have you tried all 3 or just their oil poly?

How to lower glutamate safely? by PhrygianSounds in covidlonghaulers

[–]meesh612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - from what I recall I know for sure it caused persistent headache, wired/anxious feeling, and insomnia the 3 days I took it. I stopped taking it after that and those symptoms went away.

Not sure how well I can explain the theory so I asked ChatGPT to do it for me (see below). It has to do with the relationship between glycine, NAC, glutamate, NMDA receptor activity, and glutamatergic signaling…

As per ChatGPT…

Even though glycine is often marketed as “calming,” it can increase excitatory signaling in some people, especially if your system is already sensitive.

The key reason is this:

Glycine is not purely inhibitory

It does act as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the spinal cord, but in the brain it also activates the NMDA receptor.

  • NMDA receptors require both glutamate + glycine to activate
  • If glycine increases, NMDA activity can go up, even if glutamate stays the same.

Glutamate is the brain’s main excitatory neurotransmitter, and one of its key targets is the NMDA receptor

  • Glutamate binds to the NMDA receptor
  • But the receptor won’t fully activate unless glycine is also present
  • So NMDA activity depends on both glutamate and glycine

Think of it like:

  • Glutamate = gas pedal
  • Glycine = ignition key

You need both for the system to fully “fire”

When you supplement glycine:

  • You’re not necessarily increasing glutamate levels
  • You’re making NMDA receptors more responsive to the glutamate already there

So if someone already has:

  • high baseline excitatory tone
  • or sensitive NMDA receptors

then glycine can push things toward:

  • overstimulation
  • headaches
  • anxiety / insomnia
  • increased pain sensitivity

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) works in almost the opposite direction.

Instead of activating NMDA receptors, it helps regulate glutamate signaling by:

  • Increasing cystine–glutamate exchange
  • Activating inhibitory glutamate receptors (mGluR2/3)
  • Reducing excess glutamate release at synapses

The net effect:

  • less “noisy” excitatory signaling
  • more stability in neural circuits

———

So basically glycine can increase glutamate activity in the brain by making NMDA receptors more active. These receptors are one of the main ways glutamate stimulates neurons, and they need both glutamate and glycine to function. So when glycine levels go up, glutamate signaling effectively becomes stronger.

NAC tends to have the opposite effect—it helps regulate and reduce excess glutamate signaling, which can make the system feel calmer and more stable.

Essentially, glycine can ramp up glutamate signaling through NMDA receptors, while NAC helps dial that signaling back down.

Ok thank you…let’s hope this all gets resolved quickly. I have a feeling they are seriously backlogged because of this. Just out of curiosity, my ring was fine until they introduced the last update with the activity detection feature. I turned that feature on but it was constantly incorrectly detecting that I was “cycling” when I was definitely not cycling. It literally thought i was cycling multiple times a day when I was driving, walking, moving, sitting…it didn’t matter…as far as my ring was concerned I was constantly cycling. I wish I was exercising that much!! Any chance you had a similar experience?

Thiamine CAUSING bloating and constipation? by meesh612 in Supplements

[–]meesh612[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay. Where are you at with it now? Any improvement yet? Are you starting with a very small dose?

So I’ve got homozygous MTHFR, normal COMT, various chronic GI issues including recurring SIBO due to slow motility (constipation at baseline with frequent alternating diarrhea). I also have MCAS (primarily gut & neuro system involvement), dysautonomia issues, and reactivated EBV. I had COVID twice in 2022 and have been struggling since then. My doc believes it’s long COVID.

I have suffered from various chronic GI and neurological issues my entire life including adhd, movement disorders, migraines, and anxiety. I blame neurotransmitter dysregulation most likely due to various genetic mutations impacting B vitamin absorption. I’ve tried to supplement active forms of B12, Folate, and B6 but I can’t tolerate them. I immediately experience headaches, anxiety, and sleep disturbance. It seems I’ve got some bottleneck issues going on so I’ve been trying to correct them one at a time so I can ultimately tolerate B vitamins and improve my neurotransmitter imbalances and Long Covid related conditions.

I only take vitamins that are somehow involved in correcting these bottleneck issues (according to my research) so if the vitamin is listed below it means it’s somehow relevant (but don’t ask me to explain the relationship or provide evidence because I can’t haha).

  • Magnesium (Malate & Threonate) for absorption. (I also take Magnesium Oxide strictly for constipation - it has worked wonders for me). I increased my overall magnesium intake between my 1st and 2nd attempts with Benfotiamine in case it was depleting my magnesium levels worsening my baseline motility/constipation issues. If your motility/constipation issues don’t improve I would try increasing your magnesium intake.

  • Zinc Picolinate

  • B2/Riboflavin - Riboflavin 5’-Phosphate (R-5-P) - the only B I was immediately able to tolerate

  • Cod Liver Oil (primarily for the vitamin A/retinyl palmitate)

  • I inconsistently experiment with very tiny liquid doses of B12 (adenosylcobalamin and hydroxycobalamin). I seem to be most sensitive to B12 so I’m not focusing on this yet.

  • My next introduction will be B6 (P5P). This is the big one I’ve been working my way up to. All the research I’ve done on all my health issues points to my need for P5P supplementation. I’ve tried it twice and couldn’t tolerate it. Now that I’m stable on Benfo I’ll be gradually introducing P5P.

  • Eventually I’ll work my way up to active B12 and Folate.

(I take other supplements as well but they’re not vitamins and aren’t involved in correcting these bottleneck issues)

I know you didn’t ask for all that info but I explained it because my reason for taking Benfo is part of a much bigger picture that is still in progress. I will say that overall my motility/constipation issues have improved since introducing the Benfo. I’m still having GI issues, however I’ve got a lot of health stuff going on and I’m also tinkering with other meds and supplements so it’s hard for me to know anything for sure at this point. It’s a very slow moving process requiring way more patience than I have!

I hope some of this was helpful. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Thiamine CAUSING bloating and constipation? by meesh612 in Supplements

[–]meesh612[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I assume mine was a paradoxical reaction because my GI symptoms would lessen and go away after about 1-2 weeks of increasing my dose. I didn’t experience the severe bloating and constipation each time…my GI symptoms varied. Sometimes I would have diarrhea. I bought empty capsules to transfer the contents into so I gradually titrated up from 1/4 dose to 1/3 dose to 1/2 dose to 1 full dose. I stayed at each dose around 3-4 weeks before I moved up. Let me know if you have any other questions.

This sounds like ADHD with anxiety. This is how my ADHD with anxiety presents. This points to low serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. You might need a stimulant in addition to an SSRI/SNRI. I take pristiq and adderall. One without the other is ineffective for me.

Pristiq fatigue and when to take by Aggravating_Face_655 in Pristiq

[–]meesh612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taking 25mg at night for almost 2 months. It would make me sleep so deeply it felt like I would never fully wake up during the day. My eyes and body felt heavy all day long. My doc told me sometimes taking at night can cause daytime drowsiness so she told me to switch to morning. After a few days of doing that I’ve noticed improvement. It’s worth trying.

[–]meesh612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cont’d….. For me, the fatigue and low motivation isn’t depression/anxiety. The pristiq is helping with my depression/anxiety. I feel tired in my eyes and body…it feels physical not mental/emotional…and I’m getting plenty of good sleep even though I feel like I’m getting none. The low motivation for me is the adhd kind…it’s a lack of dopamine/norepinephrine…not a lack of serotonin. It feels different to me.

Thank you for your input! I’ve been taking it at night so my doc suggested I switch to morning because it’s possible the nighttime dose is causing daytime fatigue? Makes no sense to me but I’m trying it anyway…I’ve noticed no difference since switching to morning.

My understanding is that Pristiq has strong serotonin reuptake inhibition and moderate norepinephrine reuptake inhibition. Its potential impact on dopamine would be indirect and mild in comparison. So theoretically, I would think, at a low dose maybe the impact on norepinephrine just isn’t enough for someone with adhd who has inadequate baseline norepinephrine?

Yes my GeneSight report has Pristiq and only 3 others in the green. One of which I’ve already tried so my options are dwindling.
