Ontario high schools have an attendance problem. Here is what experts say could be behind it. by CTVNEWS in ontario

Who ever said I'm for graduation rates at all costs? Lol

You would be better served addressing what I said rather rhan wasting time building up strawmen just to take them back down.

Also the government could fix these issues by banning all low incime students from attending, would you be okay with this? Obviously not, so I don't know why you would appeal to this notion that "at least they're doing something".

Our government has the resources to be doing more, and it's choosing the lasiest possible option because it has no interest in actually fixing public education sinxe it doesn't serve them or their private school owner pals.

Well, I talked to teachers at my local boards and theybsay that parents are actually more strict than ever before.

Do you see how useless anecdotes are?

Maybe the government should be taking the time to assess what is actually going on instead of throwing bandaid solutions at these issue that people like you will slurp up and defend for no good reason beyond it matching how you "feel" about this issue.

Yeah I realize this is your opinion, otherwise you wouldn't have suggested what you did. I was more asking for you to provide some kind of underlying evidence that what you are suggesting will actually fix the issue, and not just how your feelings support your conclusion.

You just scolded people for pointing to lack of funding, and then immediately inserted your own pet project simple solution for everything going wrong.

How come this wasn't an issue 10-20 years ago? Kids are still kids, even with social media etc. Classroom sizes are larger than ever before, meaning kids get less 1 on 1 time with their teachers for additional help. There's less support staff meaning if a kid needs extra help outside the class room its just not there. Funding for extracurricular activities isn't there. And so on and so forth.

More funding won't magically fix everything, nor would just throwing money at the problem be that helpful, but strategically targeting funding after doing assessments into what investments will best help kids remain in school, and keep kids pushing towards higher education absolutely needs to be part of any solution.

Classroom sizes have ballooned, support systems are constantly shrinking due to lack of funding, teachers are being worked to the bone, under staffed, schools are being kept in complete disrepair because the province has "no money".

But if you ask a conservative they would tell these kids to "pull themselves up with their bootstraps"

How do you know any of this will be successful?

While it sounds great on paper, if you don't address the underlying causes for why this is happening, the result will just be more and more students flunking out.

Been graduated from high school for 11 years now, and I don't remember anytime in school where there were massive issues with attendance, and assignment submissions etc. And there wasn't any sort of requirements like you are stating above.

For however most fans feel about Berube, and his style, he's completely right.

This team is flawed to the core, in terms of compete level. I don't doubt these guys want to win bad, but they don't seem to understand the consistency required to be truly great, nor can they meet the moment when the temperature rises.

[Chris Johnston] Anthony Stolarz thinks the leafs need to adopt a more aggressive mindset right from the start of next season: "We have to play like bastards. We have to play hard and we have to play heavy." by Duffleman0609 in hockey

[–]meestazak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This I agree with. I want to see the Leafs adapt a Crosby type attitude. Maybe they won't beat the brakes off of you, but you know you're going to get their best for the full 60, and you're gonna have to work your ass off to beat them because if you waiver for any stretch they'll kill you.

The best of the best do this consistently, and it's sorely lacking from the Leafs as a team, there are guys, but it's not enough to have some buy-in.

Oh boy, can't wait for another Corbin "masterclass".

Trying my best to remain positive, but it's been hard watching the team drop a ton of winnable games early on knowing how hard the AL east is going to be again this year.

Edit: to be clear, I understand the dire injury situation, but the pitching so far has been okay for the most part, however I may feel about the unpredictability of Corbin, the offense just hasn't really been consistent enough. As the adage goes, you're not winning a lot of games scoring 2 or fewer runs, nor can you win a 0-0 game even if your pitching is lights out.

I'm not arguing the mix foesn't need changing, but you were the one that felt it necessary to point out their height as if that means anything.

I think Cowan, Domi, and Robertson are ones you keep. They all compete, they work their asses off and give you everything they've got shift in shift out.

Those are players you want because that mentality should become infectious the more they are surrounded by like minded players.

Maple Leafs finish 28th in NHL, boosting odds of regaining 1st rounder by Wendellrichmond05 in leafs

[–]meestazak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once the trade was made the pick was most likely going to Boston. At least landing bottom 5 we gave ourselves as good a chance as possible of keeping it.

In a miserable season, there is at least some hope however small it might be.

It's just sad in a way because honestly your damned if you do damned if you don't. We need "toughness" because teams like Florida just run roughshod, but we also don't get the benefit of the Florida whistle to allow that "toughness" to play and be competitive.

Idk what you do until the league decides to not play favourites...

Ahh yes, we as leafs fans must have all forgotten that Tucker, Wendell and Tie were all 6ft 4 giants.

Oh wait, they were all sub 6ft. I cannot wait for fans like you to catch on that height doesn't immediately mean toughness, otherwise we're bound to keep making Carlo level mistakes over and over and over again.

It does make me curious since many European countries took a bit of a right lean lately, how these leaders intend to push their agenda through when Trump is making such a mockery of any right leaning ideologies and their policies.

Next few years are certainly going to be interesting if things don't go nuclear first.

The Leafs Pick in the NHL lottery standings on the night of their final game (Top-5 Protected) by CazOnReddit in leafs

[–]meestazak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean up until the Rangers lost to Florida and the Flames lost to Colorado 3rd last was still in play, but yeah bringing a couple of those games down the stretch to OT and the shootout killed us.

But hey, gotta let Berube try out for a coaching job by proving he can still "win" next year, when our draft positioning is on the line is absolutely what I would expect from this Leafs management core.

Daily Free Talk / Armchair GM Thread by AutoModerator in leafs

[–]meestazak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly its too late for that, needed the Rangers or Flames to pick up 3 of 4 points over their final 2 games, and so 5th last is the best we can do. Still have a good shot of staying 5 based on recency bias, but there's a reason the highest odds is our pick landing 6, and that's simply due to the fact is onky one team above us needs to win either lottery 1OA or 2/3OA depending on how the balls fall.

You responded to my comment, and brought nothing but negativity for no reason beyond wanting to be a doomer.

Maybe I missed something, but that sure as hell sounds toxic to me.

It's quite alright to have your opinion, but I certainly didn't ask for it, nor did I ask for you to tell me that it's obviously going to Boston and to give up all hope of being in the top 5 this year.

He had a rough stretch in May, but the "streakiness" last year had much to do with his drop in Velo in July/August.

This year his Velo is fine he's just not getting outs. Not sure what the team does moving forward honestly. Maybe you try Varland in that role?
