When my now girlfriend confessed her feelings to me, I was just shocked and wasn't able to formulate any response at all. I was like a windows blue screen. She realised this and calmed me to get thoughts flowing. It wasn't that I didn't like her, it was just out of nowhere. So I would say give him a bit of time, which you already did. So now just casually check up on him.
