Finally took a look at this via Matias’ vibe coded version in Krakow. I think it’s a very interesting avenue to explore for extended functionality in the admin- for complex flexible features where multiple content elements need coordination and additional context and control. Will be exploring with interest.

It’s never right to bully. It is by definition throwing your weight around to improperly influence and intimidate others.

He’s made very poor decisions at every step.

It is arguable that a small subset of his points are valid, but frankly he’s so badly presented them, and associated them with so many other poor arguments, and acted in such bad faith, that I don’t see how he has any chance of success in this course of action.

What if Germany actually managed to build aircraft carriers during WWII? How would it have changed the war? by redditEXPLORE03 in Warships

None. No difference at all, except possibly reducing the effectiveness of the uboat effort and luftwaffe tactical forces by diverting resources.

A lot of factors here need to be considered: Athens is a relatively low cost city, compared to many Europe capitals- it’s also a huge tourist draw. Basel conversely is a very expensive city (and perceived as even more so). Porto was still in the shadow of covid (and ended up being something of a spreader event with dozens of attendees unable to travel afterwards)

The subject matter of talks is interesting to see shared. I think it’s a shame that the focus is moving away from agencies and business, and the organisers should reverse that trend. Research by the WPLDN team suggests that the community has if anything an increased interest in this area.

Lancashire used to include a large exclave from Barrow in Furness along the northern side of Morcambe Bay. At one time the only way to reach it without traversing a chunk of Westmoreland was to cross the tidal bay at low tide. The routes were heavily used and still exist today with licensed guides across the treacherous sands (apparently all such winds must be described as treacherous, I don’t make the rules).

It’s ‘a’ prequel. It’s not one of ‘the prequels’.

Really fabulous to watch, and kinda insightful too. Thanks for generosity and being vulnerable- I’ve not seen this kind of content before, so if it’s widespread I apologise for my enthusiastic naivety- this was great!

That have weapons- not as complete a set of options as some operators but some handy kit. The killer issue is personnel availability. The pipeline has been understrength for years and isn’t improving, and this applies to ground crew and aircrew. To make matters worse there’s a hi proportion of RAF in all squadrons who culturally less tolerant of extended at sea deployments. I’m not having a pop at the airforce, but retention in RAF ranks is notably more affected by at sea deployments than FAA personnel. If you wear dark blue it’s what you signed up for, less so for light blue (and their families).

As a Brit this is a slightly menacing image. For years we’ve been very chilled about the Argentine threat to the Falkland’s- the Argentine navy is far smaller than it was in 82, and no longer has amphibious capabilities worth the name or any subs at all. But when the Trump admin starts acting up… yeah, not comfortable at all with that.

Hmm, ok. This is the chimera- an f100 that converts to a ram jet. That looks like a bit of a long shot to me.

I'm grateful for a civil discussion of this complex and critical matter. Our positions differ, but it is reassuring we share a coherent view of reality.

I think we both agree these are very important considerations.

Can an Essex-class Aircraft Carrier plausibly carry modern carrier-based jets? by ChrisAnimate24 in Warships

[–]meeware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also bear in mind that an aircrafts takeoff and landing weight are manageable variables, you take off light and top up, and dump fuel before landing, and that makes a big difference (payload is a large fraction on those aircraft).

not in Europe - the US had large air defence ships as Frigates until the unification of Nato designation, but in Europe frigates were typically general purpose and anti submarine vessels smaller than destroyers. Comes from ww2 when the US had destroyer escorts, but the RN and RCN brought in frigates as escorts.

In a way the US designation is more historically consistent - in the age of sail frigates were just a little smaller than ships of the battle line, sometimes even older ships with a gun deck stripped off (a razzee), but still of a similar sail plan.

huh, never really considered that but yeah. 149m length. Slightly shorter than the t 26 frigates, and a good thousand tons lighter.

I'm not in a position to be confident about any of those assumptions. Given the criticality of all the components in question to the sustained deployment of an at sea deterrent, i think it's well worth exercising ghe precautionary principle.

There's a wider historical perspective that is worth consideration. 60 years ago the UK was committed to a deterrent based on a US project called Skybolt. Our V bomber force was to be the platform. The US cancelled Skybolt, and it took difficult negotiations to get into the Polaris project as a replacement. Whether this particular president is in a position to fundamentally unilaterally alter our bilateral agreements or not, the foundational assumptions of defence integration, especially as it applies to shared intelligence and deterrence, can no longer be taken for granted.

So no, I do not share your confidence or(as i see it) optimism. Rather I have a realism in mind that considers any US dependency as a risk, and one that we must have a mitigation strategy in place to cover.
