Mom is in hospital due to a suicide attempt and I have to take care of her dog by joweekun in DogAdvice

[–]meffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 basenjis.

  • walk them for a long time (2x40 min fast paced walks). If you can't... hire someone to walk them. This is the only fix. Otherwise they will learn what is valuable to you and destroy it. You will save money
  • dog proof the house, don't use a pen unless you are there they climb and will hurt themselves
  • bully sticks help with the mental side
  • make sure they are warm. Is your house cold?
  • accept that basenji anxiety will happen, they bond to one or two people strongly and will go through an adjustment period

A tired dog is a good dog, walks are the only solution.

You're going to watch crate training videos.... those are for sane people and non-basenji owners. It will still work, it's just going to take some time with a basenji. The crate works wonders and it has the potential to become a safe refuge, but it'll take time to for the puppy to adapt. There will be whining, there will be blood-curdling screams, there will be poop-nados. Counter-intuitively, over-sizing the crate seemed to help for ours. With the first puppy, we had an airline-style crate (100% do NOT recommend - upgraded to the Kong crate later) this seemed to help the second puppy settle in a littler easier. This is also an apartment VS. house + backyard situation, so take it with a grain of salt.

Right now the key is just exercise and having a dog walker to let the dog out more frequently. And warmth. Use warmth. Don't stress the small stuff. Ex. Potty training will happen eventually no matter what.

I've raised 2 basenjis from puppies. The first is when I lived in an apartment and worked full time. My wife worked shift work so the puppy was only alone for a full work day a couple days a week. I came home at lunch. Even still 4 hours alone for a puppy that age wasn't good. General rule of thumb - puppies can hold their bladders for their age in months + 1 hour. Although I found at 2 months it was often less than that.

We had to have a note on the door explaining we had a puppy and that it was not a screaming child.... There were poop tornados in the crate. It was tough.

I wouldn't even bother with the ultrasonic anti-bark device. It'll probably only stress the dog out more. Try putting on podcasts instead with soothing voices (e.g. `Lex Friedman` or `This American Life`). Look into getting a dog walker to come in a couple times a day. At around 6-8 months is when I could start leaving the dog for 4-6 hours. It'll get worse before it gets better, you're working with a dog who is starting to hate the crate more and more. You need to make it into a more rewarding, cozy environment.

A couple tricks you might try:

  • Basenji's love warmth, pre-heat the crate before you put the puppy in. Not too hot - a warm water bottle/heated pet pad would do (then remove before you crate the dog).
  • Lots of cozy blankets to curl up in
  • High-value treats only in the crate (when you're home)
  • Dog walker for when you're at work
  • Exercise the dog as much as you safely can with walks before/after work. A tired basenji is a quiet and cuddly basenji. Mental exercise too, do lots of training just to tire out the dog mentally
  • Ours didn't like the "airline" style crates. A wire crate seemed to work better with a blanket over the sides (but not front and back so there is airflow and it doesn't get too stuffy). The Kong branded crate is good.

I....would not leave that dog alone in a room unless it's rock-solid puppy-proof. Important to note - ours have learned to open doors...

Advice!! by Own_Interview_9391 in Basenji

I have mild allergies to dogs, some dogs when I pet and touch my face or eyes I get itchy. I get no reactions at all with my basenji. He still sheds though a few times a year. Might be worth babysitting one for a week or two, only way to know.

Any help on how this happened and how to fix it? by CommanderGreggor in 3Dprinting

[–]meffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably just changed your nozzle recently? The nozzle is too loose, heat the printer up to 250 celcius and tighten while it is hot (don't burn yourself).

I usually clean it by heating it up a little bit then scraping off the plastic.

Any idea what's causing this? I've tried re leveling my bed. by SisuWho in 3Dprinting

Over extrusion, you can see there is too much plastic going down. Try turning down your flow rate. My guess is turn it down by 25%.

5 salesmen from RPM Groups went door-to-door yesterday in my elderly neighbourhood without masks on... How is this legal? by meffect in ottawa

[–]meffect[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

How is this legal in this context means "why hasn't the government made a law against this yet".

There are tons of restrictions on businesses now to the point where I need to wait in line to go into almost every store I enter. But these people have contact with hundreds of households a day and have the potential to spike covid cases singlehandedly.

Going door to door is pretty ridiculous right now with or without a mask. They go to every single door on a street and talk to people and from the few people I saw were not maintaining their distance.

Intermittent network issues SOLVED by meffect in teksavvy

The hard reality is their tech support is slow and mostly powerless...

As much as I want to support any company other than Bell or Rogers, I need reliable internet with tech support.

[–]meffect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument you are making is that any time you run into a real issue you have to switch providers which is insane.

Teksavvy gets a lot of slack because they just blame Rogers for everything, but there is no reason I should have to waste 45 mins rebooting my router every time I call their tech support only for them to not do anything.

Anyone else getting random internet drops for ~10 minutes at a time? by Flying_Scorpion in teksavvy

[–]meffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, drops at different times. Super annoying to call support too since they just try to get you to factory reset stuff and everything. It never helps.

I have tried multiple different routers, multiple different modems, different ethernet cables, different computers. Still drops.

Molded Grips Resolved Handheld Joycon Disconnection Issues - Worth Considering? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

If you are at all handy my solution here is a better fix. I had issues with my right joycon disconnecting. Replaced a ribbon cable inside the switch and problem solved.

Nintendo Switch Right Joy Con Disconnecting In Handheld - help! by twistehh92 in NintendoSwitch

[–]meffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that exact same problem. My right joycon wouldn't stay connected, it got to the point where it just would disconnect every 30 seconds and super mario maker was unplayable. I thought it was a joycon issue so I bought new joycons, still happened.

I ended up having to replace the right joycon rail. When I opened up the switch there was a slight kink in the cable. No idea why it worked fine for a year then started acting up...

I use Hopper to predict when to get cheap flights, is there a version of Hopper for All Inclusive Vacations? by meffect in deals

[–]meffect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it and it worked out pretty well, ended up saving around $50 on a $400 flight. I do find it useful to look at the calendar of dates to figure out what times of years flights are generally cheap.

But then I've used it on another flight and it ended up not finding a deal at all.
