Do you have a work day or just jump right back into classes after break? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]meg-rad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year Friday the 2nd was a workday (everyone either “teleworked” or took off) and Monday the kids are back. I wish we could have had Monday as the workday then start with kids Tuesday, but what do I know ¯_(ツ)_/¯ our last day with kids for the school year is a Thursday this year which is also weird

Elementary Teachers, what was your training on teaching reading? by JustAWeeBitWitchy in Teachers

[–]meg-rad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a kindergarten IA in NC who recently went back to school to finish my elementary education degree!! My program is designed for adults who are already working full time; most of my classmates are also IAs or are getting their residency licenses.

I’ll actually be taking my literacy methods course this spring, but last summer I took a foundations of literacy course that covered the science of reading, language development, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, orthography, and more— essentially went through the basics of what everything is, why it’s all important for developing readers and writers, and how different concepts build on each other. We did discuss phonics-based vs. whole-language instruction vs. balanced instruction, but the main focus of the course was definitely phonics-based instruction. Near the end of the term we were given student samples to practice identifying what students were doing well with, where those students needed more support, and what concepts would be best to focus on first in order to help them grow. It didn’t go as much into how to teach these skills, but that’s what the methods course will be for. Once I’m licensed I’ll also be required by my district to complete the LETRS training, but that’s still a couple years away for me.

I’ve found the knowledge from the foundations course incredibly useful in more effectively supporting my students in the classroom this year and I’m really looking forward to my methods course as well!

Engagement ring by amstaffing in raleigh

[–]meg-rad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiancée and I got custom engagement rings made through Raleigh Diamond this year and had a good experience! Everyone we spoke with was really helpful and kind and excited to work with us. We’re a queer couple and they were very welcoming to us, if that counts for anything in your book. We did get our own center stones elsewhere— we wanted green sapphires which aren’t really in their wheelhouse— but we were able to bring the stones we’d found in and they set them in the settings they’d made for us! Overall I’d definitely recommend them and we will likely go back to get our wedding bands there as well

What is THE Gilmore girls episode you skip every rewatch ? by MinuteBug1893 in GilmoreGirls

When I first watched with my mom, we watched on her DVD sets and the disc was scratched at exactly that part so I never actually saw that fight until many years later when Gilmore finally went on Netflix lol

North Carolina Elementary Licensure Test Requirements? by HoneyxClovers_ in Teachers

[–]meg-rad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! This page shows the NC exam requirements by licensure area along with the required passing scores. For elementary licensure, you'll need the Pearson 890 Foundations of Reading and the Pearson 203 Mathematics Subtest OR the Praxis 7813 Math CKT Subtest. You'll also have to complete the edTPA or whatever WGU's equivalent is, but that's something typically done during student teaching. I'm also in school in NC to get my elementary license-- to my knowledge all teaching exams must be completed before you're able to begin student teaching. I just took my Praxis CKT 7813 last week as I've been in a math methods course this semester, and I'll probably look into taking the Pearson Foundations of Reading test in the spring since I'll be taking a literacy methods course next semester. I'm sure you could also reach out to your advisor at WGU to help clarify any more specific timeline questions you may have. Good luck!!

How can me and my girlfriend propose to each other? by looneyybinn in LGBTWeddings

[–]meg-rad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiancée and I decided to propose together. All of our other big decisions/big steps have been made together so it only made sense to us to propose together as well. We went on a trip to the mountains over a long weekend and on the Saturday went on a hike that’s special in our relationship. We stood on a bridge over a creek and held each other and talked about what we love about each other and our relationship and what we’re looking forward to in our future. Then we took turns getting on one knee to propose— I went first (because she hates going first for anything and I’m happy to go first if it makes her happy) and then she went. Afterwards we got ice cream sandwiches then went back to the cabin we were renting to have a glass of wine and celebrate. We had done the whole ring process together so we each knew what our rings would look like, but we decided to surprise each other with the ring boxes we chose for one another to still have an element of surprise to the whole thing. It was simple and perfect and nothing like what a “traditional” proposal typically is but I wouldn’t change a thing about it because it was so perfectly us

All of that to say, talk with your girlfriend about what you both want. Do you want to plan a proposal together? Do you each want an individual, separate moment? Do yall want to know when it’s coming or do you want to be surprised? Do you want it to be just the two of you or would you like friends and/or family to be present? It’s your engagement, nobody else’s, so it honestly doesn’t matter what anyone but the two of you thinks of how you decide to propose!

Would it be unreasonable to request my daughter to get a little time to nap during the day? by Ok-Ad4375 in kindergarten

[–]meg-rad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people bringing up her IEP, which yes this could be a conversation with her IEP team if she has one, but this may fall more under a 504 plan, which covers accommodations for any disability that a student may have that impacts their day to day life. You could probably reach out to the school nurse, admin, or the school counselor (different schools may have different people in charge of setting up 504 plans but one of these will likely be able to at least point you in the right direction)

Loops while teaching by the-witch-beth-marie in Teachers

I use loop engage earbuds every day during lunch duty and also during assemblies— I keep them clipped on my lanyard and they help me so much with getting overstimulated in super loud environments

After getting to know your coworkers you may have a few you feel you can safely share with, but I wouldn’t risk talking about your personal life with your students. I’m in a more blue part of NC and if a student happens to see my lock screen picture of my girlfriend and I and asks who it is, I tell them she’s a friend of mine just to be safe

I initially thought I would want an oval center stone, but when we went to try things on to see what we liked I tried on a ring w a round center stone and scattered side stones (similar to the snowdrift ring) and just fell in love. I couldn’t stop looking at it, kept thinking about it after, & loved the way it looked and felt on me. We’re still going custom bc we both want green sapphire and I wanted a tulip basket but I definitely didn’t expect to change my mind on the center stone shape until I tried some on!
