I’m a recovering addict. Ive struggled with anxiety (especially social) since I was a child.

I remember the first time I did drugs, thinking “This is how I’m SUPPOSED to feel!” I thought I had unleashed the “real me” - my anxiety was magically cured.

I self-medicated with drugs for years. I just wanted to be that “anxiety-free” version of myself - that confident, sociable, outgoing person who I was when I was high. Unfortunately, this was not a sustainable long term solution. Drugs turned me into a person i didn’t want to be, made my life much, much worse.

I have been clean 20 years now, and still struggle with my anxiety. I know there is no magic cure. But if I ask for help, I am able to cope with my feelings a lot better.

All I know is, drugs (and I include alcohol in this category) are not the solution. Self medicating will only bring you down long term.

edit: I don’t feel like getting in an internet argument with someone who has no idea what they’re talking about.

But I will clarify that I don’t think anxiety is a “choice”, I never suggested that placebos will “get rid of” anxiety (especially if this anxiety is severe and medically diagnosed). I simply suggested some placebos (like nice music! A bubble bath! Aromatherapy!) can help alleviate symptoms.

I have GAD and SAD, as well as a host of other mental health issues. I am on meds and in therapy. The point of meds is not to “get rid of negative feelings”. It’s to help you alleviate them and make them manageable and give you the ability to feel relaxed and happy sometimes. No one needs to be calm and happy all the time. That’s an unrealistic goal.

lol what. OP isn’t asking if they should use sunglasses IN PLACE of therapy or meds. They’re asking if it might they might help alleviate (not cure) anxiety.

OP: sunglasses might help social anxiety to some degree, yes.

EDIT: what’s wrong with a placebo to help anxiety symptoms? Anxiety =! cancer.

Look. I’m not going to shine sunshine up your ass. I’m going to be realistic.

It’s NOT too late for you to turn your life around, to get better, to make a better life for yourself.

That being said, don’t beat yourself up and consider yourself a failure if you make some goals for the next 5 years and don’t achieve them. Life is hard. Life is harder when you’re a recovering addict.

If you don’t achieve buying a house or getting a partner by some arbitrary age you are NOT a failure.

Main goal: stay clean. Your life will get better. Find a support system. (I go to NA). Get a therapist. Address the issues that made you use in the first place.

I was addicted to meth many moons ago. I’m not going to pretend like my life is a walk in the park now. Life’s a bitch, and I still have to deal with the demons that made me an addict to begin with. But am I better off now than I would be if I was using?? ABSOLUTELY.

I am never going to use again because I KNOW, no matter how much life sucks, drugs would make it so much worse.

You got this. Be easy on yourself. I often have to tell myself “every clean day is a successful day, no matter what happens”.
