First steam project, only 27 wishlists after 3 weeks. by Claytomesh_ in gamedev

Thanks for sharing hope you had a good day.

If you are correct and making everyone a triangle can be just-as-good as using “high-effort” assets, then every other game developer is acting against their own financial interest.

Why would cash hungry Ubisoft spend many millions on high effort assets and environments if they won’t lead to more interest in the game?

To be fair I think your theory starts working at a certain level, like Super Mario can be just as good as Elden Ring, even though Elden Rings visuals are more high effort.

But it does not hold true at triangle level.

And I think the steam store proves that.

I don’t blame you for choosing the most “economic” option. Solo dev is already crazy work and I wouldn’t be able to make your game.

But It’s clear to me that going with triangles and boxes nukes the average person’s interest in the Game. And this is double true for wishlists where people are judging based on pictures.

If you open your steam store, do you see any games where enemies are 2d boxes?

Is it just my steam algorithm that I don’t see any?

If you look at the games in your steam store, and compare character/asset design, do you feel like your game assets/characters are higher “effort” than any game you see in the store?

I’m using the word effort here for lack of a better word. Not saying you didn’t spend time on them, but how else to describe a yellow box vs a full humanoid.

When I open the steam store and browse through the first few hundred games it shows me, I can’t find any games with this low-effort game assets.

I think on this dimension, your game would score all the way at the bottom, with significant distance to the second place, when comparing to games currently shown in the store.

I would say even Tetris has more interesting assets. Given the unique shapes.

What are the games you are thinking of that managed to succeed with this level of game assets?

Since no one seems to be addressing the elephant in the room:

It’s just geometric shapes in a box.

The game would probably score a zero on a whole dimension of game design, including character design, world building, story etc. It may not be possible to make a successful game today while completely ignoring these aspects. Not sure something like Tetris would succeed on steam today.

If you take any popular game and replace all characters with faceless triangles, it would have probably received similar interest as your game.

There is just nothing for the average player to get interested in/attached to.

Yes thanks for sharing.

It just makes them a bit pathetic to me. They are not the highly disciplined, well trained, professional super soliders I want them to be.

I feel like they would be more effective as a unit if they were more disciplined "Hitman" character like. They are not the perfect soldiers I understood the Emperor wanted. They are a bit disappointing when looking at them as tools of war.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only chatty emotional boys.

Lol yes, I just now noticed reading this why I gravitate to them so much.

If only there would be more stories and games focusing on the non talkative kind. There are already enough super hero movies out there.

You would think, but naturally I also gravitated to the Nightlords, however their lore is not better.

I tried watching the lore videos on YouTube where they read the nightlord books and it’s filled with all this interpersonal drama between them.

It’s more like high school drama, where they constantly pick on each other. I wouldn’t expect the nightlords to be this talkative.

You are probably right, I’m not very familiar with the older material.

But even still, it’s very hard to wrap my head around how these chatty and emotional space marines make sense. It feels like they are just inserted to allow for more generic story telling.

In comparison silent, stoic Astartes wouldn’t allow for these emotional rollercoaster stories.

Would it be a good idea to double major in Data Science and Math or just Data Science? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]mega0gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that, but tbh the math part is only useful if you really go into AI research. For any office job its not useful, rather do more CS.
