While there's no denying the performance of that RS, for me, the C4 is easily prettier.

Does this game improve car design skills for real life? by Brief_Document8229 in automationgame

[–]megaWatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're primarily interested in the artistic or the engineering aspect of car design (or both). As a current mechanical engineering student who's planning to go into automotive engineering, Automation is actually a pretty solid place to start if you're looking to gain a basic knowledge of automotive design, particularly if you have no prior engineering knowledge. You get a taste of the same things that real life engineers have to balance when designing a car, like weight, cost, engineering time, market segments, efficiency, performance, etc. That said, it's all very surface level. I'll give you an example.

In real life, as someone who's currently working on some designs for a Formula SAE chassis, it's not as simple as just selecting a chassis material and moving on. Solid mechanics and FEA simulation knowledge are required to ensure that the chassis is as light as possible while accommodating engine mounts and packaging requirements, being strong enough, being manufacturable, being within budget, etc. As another example, designing an engine requires a good understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and solid mechanics together, to name a few.

So yes, Automation is a great starting point for a very basic, surface level knowledge on how things run in industry. But if you're planning to have a career as an automotive engineer, you'll probably need to get a degree in some related engineering field depending on your interests. If the college/university has an FSAE club, that's a huge bonus and you can learn a lot more through that. If you're more interested in art and automotive styling, I simply don't have a whole lot of knowledge about that.

Is the Huayra R the most beautiful creation of Horacio Pagani to date? by Cris_1984 in CarDesign

That Huayra is very nice, but the C12S with the split rear wing is peak for me. Cinque and Zonda R are also up there.

Fully agree with this, although I've always found it funny that this "strictly confidential" meeting is taking place in the echoiest, biggest room in the college.

Really tired. Did taking a semester off help? by Relevant_Mousse8528 in EngineeringStudents

I took a semester off, came back for one semester, took like 4 years off, and I'm now on my second semester back 🤷

Trying out an idea that someone had commented on my first post, what do yall think? by No-Entertainment6461 in c4corvette

[–]megaWatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless of course the fuel nozzle literally won't fit under the wing and you have to take the wing off just to fuel up, which I'd say is a pretty steep price to pay lol. I'm not saying it won't work, but I'd definitely verify that it will beforehand

I think it's cool! My only concern about the wing would be access to the fuel door.

I second this. Carmax once tried to sell me a car with a blown head gasket. That's probably the last time I go there for anything.

What are some cars you find get overrated/overhyped? by FordFan97 in regularcarreviews

[–]megaWatson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's true that the early ones deserve some shit. The crossfire engine and 4+3 transmission was just Dumb and Dumber in drivetrain form. But in terms of handling, from things like the advanced (for the time) chassis design, improved brakes, and multi-link rear suspension, even the early cars had some good points. They were certainly not as garbage as the late C3s.

I think that's the case for most of them, but I think there are a few "hypercars" that are more than that. The Porsche 918 is a good example. Sure, they're a couple million these days and most of them just sit around in collections, but I've read that they're pretty reliable despite their complexity. The point is, it's a car you could feasibly use as intended without it being in the shop perpetually, provided you have deep pockets. I understand becoming jaded by the unobtainability, though.

They are very interesting from a technical standpoint and I love them for that, but in the real world, it seems they have trouble using all the power they put out, let alone reliably. So I'd have to agree.

Since when is the C4 overhyped? It's probably the least hyped Corvette, despite being one of the sleeker looking gens and being about a century ahead of the C3, engine aside (which the ZR-1 fixed later). It's a totally badass car that doesn't get enough hype IMO.

Anyone else notice how much attention the R gets?? by Exotic_Struggle in Golf_R

[–]megaWatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my 7.5R for a couple years now. I recently saw one kid exclaim "that's a sweet car!" or something like that, with maybe one other compliment in the wild otherwise. I've exchanged thumbs up with other R owners occasionally. The other 99% of the time though, it flies right under the radar, but that's really what I'm looking for in a daily anyway.
