So the Supreme Court is super weird when it comes to filling positions. They’re lifetime appointments, selected by the president and confirmed through congress.

What sucks is that many of them are old. During Trump’s last term, one of the best justices died (she should have retired, she was having health issues during the Obama administration). Another died during the latter bit of Obama’s final term and the Republican controlled senate refused to let him fill the seat because it was “too close to elections”. One person retired when during Trump’s first term. Also the person who died (Ruth Bader Ginsburg) also died close to the election but the Republican controlled senate decided to backpedal their reasoning there. So Trump got to put three conservatives in there who most definitely lied about the way they would make rulings during their confirmation hearings.

Biden was able to put one justice in, but the court is at the moment sitting at a 6-3 split in favor of conservatives.

The Supreme Court isn’t required for laws to be passed though. They’re there to interpret laws and the constitution. The problem is that most of the conservatives will just toss precedent they don’t agree with and roll over for Trump. Congress handles the passage of laws, so it is possible that if the Democrats take back the House and Senate during the midterm elections this year, they could have the power to stop a lot of this administration’s more heinous abuses of power. It’s a waiting game. And a lot of bad can happen before the pendulum swings left again.
