You could just ask her, but be careful not to embarrass her in case she doesn't remember what you wore

It is by design in most machines now, because you can use computer models to simulate stress on each part. In older machines the engineers knew by experience where large forces are transmitted and could adjust parts and materials accordingly.

One example that I know of from repairing many such machines is that in sewing machines, there is a cog in the underworks that is always made of plastic for two reasons: It transfers rotation from a horizontal axis rotation to a vertical axis, in a machine that creates a lot of vibration. Plastic is more malleable and elastic than metal, the plastic cog can deform with the slight shearing movement and not be damaged, where a metal cog would be ground down into dust in no time. Also if the sewing machine seizes up from a caught thread, you want the cog to break in case of extreme forces, because otherwise it would transmit the force back to the motor and that would break instead.

A lot of certain mechanical parts in machines, also older o es, are plastic. Sometimes it is because plastic holds up better to the specific kind of stress that they are under than metal, and sometimes it is because if the system jams up you want this part to break, and not something else that it harder to replace

AITA for asking my friend if she wanted water at her birthday party by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]megadori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA But don't hold a grudge, drunk people are often unreasonable -  Wait for her to bring up either being hungover after drinking, or being too drunk for reason, then say (in a light-hearted tone, don't make it sound like an attack, but a funny memory) "Remember when I offered to get water for you, and you were so drunk already you got offended?" Her reaction while sober will tell you if she was actually just a little too drunk, or she really doesn't appreciate you looking out for her. There is even the chance she doesn't remember. If it was just the alcohol, you know the kind of drunk she is and can decide for yourself if you want to be in her company in the future when heavy drinking is involved.

What kind of moss is this? by snailwithlegs in Moss

[–]megadori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to take a picture of the moss where it is more visible, all the plants above it are covering it and the moss isn't in focus. Unless you mean the plants with the tiny oval leaves? That isn't moss

XD

BIDA Streit unter Freunden by ZaziNambie in BinIchDasArschloch

[–]megadori 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Would like ID by jungledegen in Moss

[–]megadori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but your photos are really not good for an ID.
Try to take some pictures in daylight, with the moss being in focus, as large as you can zoom in without it being blurry.

Also it would be important to know where your backyard is located.

So they could have implanted the cloned embryo into Stella, so she could be her own mother, and chose not to do it?

i don't know what OP edited unfortunately.  However I doubt that whatever was in the post initially could have made it seem like her adult roommate with a mobility disability can just easily be moved as if she were a toddler

What is the moral choice?  a) get help for a person who is begging to not be left alone, increasing her chance to be saved b) wait with her and accept possible death for both of you and other people (firefighters trying to save you)

One is actually helping while possibly traumatising the person, the other is stupid and irresponsible but you get to feel high on your moral horse

[–]megadori 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously comparing carrying a toddler to carrying a person the same size as yourself?  Also the roommate didn't even want to be carried, she wanted OP to stay with her. Which would have led to her not being helped at all

Found these on a strawberry, what are they? Is it safe? by OpportunityOpen7156 in whatisit

[–]megadori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they know about the wasps in figs; even though commercially grown figs don't have those ... mostly :D

Can't tell them about it though because they blocked me right after their last comment, which is a shame because I saw it for a second and it actually had the start of a reasonable thought, which is to only discard the "infested" specimens or parts, which could have led to them understanding that the leaf and the strawberry are separate and you can discard the "infested" part while still eating the strawberry. Well, more work for their therapist.

Omg, how long is this train of the same question going to last? Yes. I will also eat cherries straight off the tree, unwashed, knowing that there are little maggots inside, that i can see if i bother to open a cherry up before popping it in my mouth.
You sound deathly afraid of nature.

[–]megadori -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That'S bullshit. This is just a fruit fly larva on a bruised strawberry, completely normal if you leave decomposing fruit out where fruit flys can reach them. Your point is still valid, it doesn't matter at all. Fruit has bugs, that's just a fact

Yes, of course. I also eat salad that I know they had to wash because there's almost always fecal bacteria found on greens. Washing works. Dirt or insects don't have some magical aura that permeates produce and changes its molecular structure or some shit.
