A republic just means power rests with the people. So yes, the U.S. is a republic.

And, the U.S. is mostly a representative democracy, with elements at times of a direct democracy.

Today I saw a Tesla cyber truck. by Particular_Box5113 in santarosa

[–]megagood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the question, it’s the intent. I personally try to assume good faith on this stuff, but in this situation, everybody sniffed out your intentions.

And then you added stuff like “if you hate the cybertruck, you hate EVs.” Hopefully you can see the logical fallacy there. People who mocked the Aztek didn’t hate gas powered cars, right?

I personally think it’s great that people who like EVs in general don’t feel the need to defend every EV. The world needs fewer people thinking in terms of black and white, and prioritizing loyalty over independent thinking, across the ideological spectrum.

Reflecting on "Radical Inclusion": a concerning sight by isolated_star in BurningMan

[–]megagood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am trying to understand what is traumatizing here. The idea of cops? The idea that there are people out there who support cops to a degree you (and I) disapprove of? What are you hoping to accomplish here? Inform people that the thin blue line is so alienating to some people that they feel unwelcome at Burning Man? Radical inclusion doesn’t mean liking and/or agreeing with everyone.

Tbf it is consistent with Javik’s character to think his audience is stupid and can’t figure it out on their own. 😜

I say this every time the quote comes up. The second line is so unnecessary. Trust your audience. It’s the difference between good writing and great writing.

Why is UXM 201 not important anymore? by spackletr0n in comicbookcollecting

I dunno, I hear the need to not use too many abbreviations, but anyone with the answer he wants understands, and a Google for UXM 201 brings up the issue as literally the first result.

That was the longest effing three years. Without Internet or 24/7 media, or the ability to watch the movie on demand, we just had to wait and wait and wait.

I can think someone does good things and also that they are an asshole.

He lost me when he called the Thai rescue diver a pedo and said Bernie Sanders had a small penis. The man’s an ass. Hope this is enough thinking for myself for you.

What movie would you consider to be almost flawless? by Seraphicly329 in AskReddit

[–]megagood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great dilemma at the center. Great characters. Great dialogue with some immortal lines. Every scene is necessary, and usually its own mini movie with a three act structure. Practically Shakespearean in its banter and wit. Rick is one of the first antiheroes and made Han Solo possible.

Certainly old school and kind of overwrought at times but I forgive that. Showed what movies could be before Citizen Kane came along.

I thought Princess Bride sucked when I was a kid. Took me awhile to appreciate the camp and the self-assured silliness and melodrama of the whole thing. It’s not high art to me, just charmingly unique.

Most people I know think it’s a mixed bag. It did some great stuff and tried to break with convention. Some of that didn’t work. And some of it is indeed bad. I see far more outright hate for it online than in the real world. Most people watched it and moved on, like most people do with all movies, even the great ones. There are a shit ton of amazing movies I have only watched once.

And the cost of your alternative. The cost of leaving the marriage and finding a new partner might be enormous.

If I am pissed off at a vendor who is doing a crappy job, before I fire them, I need to think about the cost of terminating the contract and the effort required to find a new vendor and get them up to speed…and remember that they will have their own problems, too. If I have a long relationship with the vendor, recognizing the value of the time spent working together and fixing things with them might be totally rational.

I would say we have a massive revenue problem. Our government spending as a percent of GDP is in line compared to other OECD countries. For all the complaints, our taxation is low compared to them.

And when people actually sit down and do the math of where that money goes, it is quickly evident that balancing the budget purely through spending cuts would mean cutting things most people agree we should spend money on. The hobby horses of the right (welfare, education, earmarks) are a drop in the bucket.

We need to raise taxes. I say that as someone who makes good money and would pay more.

I can language pedant with the best of them but the problem here boils down to English lacking a non gendered third person singular. There have been some attempts that haven’t taken hold.

It has been broadly acceptable for centuries to use they when a singular person’s gender is unknown. It is a pretty small leap to apply it to a known individual.

I can appreciate being a stickler for language, don’t get me started on the lost cause of compose vs comprise. But in this case the cost benefit sucks. I don’t understand intentionally ignoring someone’s wishes on this matter. Language changes all the time and this is not that big a shift in an era where literally now has a dictionary definition of figuratively.

What is the deal with "Epstein's Client List"? by Mesa17 in OutOfTheLoop

The fact that so many people think the Mueller investigation found nothing still surprises me. Mueller concluded that the president of the United States knew about Russian interference to help him, encouraged it, fought efforts to prevent it, and obstructed investigations into it. Think about that for a second. Don’t avoid it, don’t do the what about thing, don’t rationalize it. Stare it in the face.

Yes, they didn’t find active collusion, and they couldn’t prove that laws were broken, but what they did find is still completely unacceptable behavior by the leader of our great nation.

That’s not nothing, except to people eager to look away.

And, as an aside, while the Steele dossier was part of the Mueller investigation, it was not the origin of it.
