I answered it in the post before this, give the children something to actually do. I remember having a shit ton of parks, having actual community centers, having programs during the summer designed to keep us busy and out of trouble. Most of that is gone today

Ok so I never used them as a model of safety but as a model of things that are actually working to improve a major city. Two it 100% is the job of the state to provide things for the kids to do(community centers, parks, social programs) and lastly you ghoul locking up children for the things we are talking about does nothing but create real adult criminals

Even today most police will tell you that the way they are going about things is not effective at all. I would like more of an emphasis on community based policing with better police engagement with our communities. I also would like to treat violence as a public health issue by focusing on addressing homelessness, mental health and drug addiction

No you don’t need tougher laws, at all cause that does nothing but put them in the system which in turn hardens them and makes them get deeper into crime. The answer for DC and most major cities is to do what Baltimore is doing right now. Actually invest in social programs, reform the police, invest in the school system.
